The lessons we learned from the 9/11 tragedy were; kindness, respect, loyalty, and always be prepared.

For those who actually experienced it, it changed their perspective forever. I had to grow up much more quickly, most children are never exposed to such a thing happening less than two blocks away. New York is a close knit family, while it may seem that there are too many people for this to be so I assure you it is true. When loved ones died, and friends disappeared things just felt terrible. While it did affect all of the United States, those living in downtown New York City were affected much more deeply.

al-Qaeda

Al Qaeda attacked and destroyed the Twin Towers because they (falsely) believe that the West (i.e., the U.S. and Europe) are the aggressors in a (non-existent) war upon the people and Islamic nations of the Middle East. To them, the Twin Towers, which were home to many U.S.-based and foreign-based financial institutions, as well as numerous other corporations, symbolized the U.S., our economy, and our capitalist system. Likewise, they view the Pentagon as symbolizing the U.S. military.

Some al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked 4 planes intending to crash them into major landmark buildings. One plane each into the north and south World Trade Center towers and The Pentagon. The fourth was most likely targeting the Capital or The White House but instead crashed into a field in Pennsylvania when the passengers fought back after realizing their fate.

United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower 17 minutes after American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower.

The first two were crashed into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City and a third was crashed into the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed in an open field in Pennsylvania.

It did happen 2 planes crashed into the towers everyone on the plane died but not more than 1300 survived in the tower

All of the fatwas, before September 11, 2001, from Osama Bin Laden have a consistent theme : US troop presence in Saudi Arabia. In 1998, bin Laden said in a fatwa: "For more than seven years the United States has been occupying the lands of Islam in the holiest of places, the Arabian peninsula, plundering its riches, dictating to its rulers, humiliating its people, terrorizing its neighbors, and turning its bases in the peninsula into a spearhead through which to fight the neighboring Muslim peoples" (see February 22, 1998). [Nation, 2/15/1999] The attacks were consistent with the overall mission statement of al-Qaeda, as set out in a 1998 fatwā issued by Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Ahmed Refai Taha, Mir Hamzah, and Fazlur Rahman.

This statement begins by quoting the Koran as saying, "slay the pagans wherever ye find them" and extrapolates this to conclude that it is the "duty of every Muslim" to "kill Americans anywhere".[125] Bin Laden elaborated on this theme in his "Letter to America" of October 2002: "You are the worst civilization witnessed by the history of mankind: You are the nation who, rather than ruling by the Shariah of Allah in its Constitution and Laws, choose to invent your own laws as you will and desire. You separate religion from your policies, contradicting the pure nature which affirms Absolute Authority to the Lord and your Creator."

They generally target the Allies (UK, USA, Europe, India, Pakistan, etc) and even their own countries.
