Generally, the make, model number, serial number, and sometimes the choke is engraved along the left side of the barrel near the receiver. You should be able to find it on yours unless it has been replaced or removed. It's important to record the serial numbers on any gun you buy as it sometimes lets you recover the gun in case it is stolen.

Their are 3 Types of SPAS 12 Shotguns in the U.S. and only 5% (Approx. 1850) of the Franchi SPAS 12 Production made it into the U.S. prior to the 1989 Importation Ban. The Prices below reflect U.S. Imported SPAS Shotguns Only.

The Fixed Stock SPAS 12 and 6+1 Round Magazine Tube Version with Pushed Back Bladed Front Sight on the Barrel Produced as the Sporting Purpose in 1990-1994 Average at Auction $1100-$1800.

The Folding Stock Model called the SPAS-12L. Built for Law Enforcement until 1994 these also will have all the options of the Pre Importation Ban and average the same price as a Pre Importation Ban. Average at Auction $1400-$3500.

JC Higgins never made shotguns. That is a Sears model number. Shotguns were made by other companies using the Sears brand name- JC Higgins. Yours is likely a High Standard shotgun. If it has no serial number (most did not) it was made prior to 1968. Serial numbers were not required by law until then.

The least (no choke at all) is cylinder. Tightest- Turkey.
