Yes! The .410 gauge shotgun (same caliber as the .45 Long Colt) was the alternate round (.22 & .410) in the US Air Force's survival rifle for downed pilots. Bird shot is good for home defense, larger shot for close work outside and the slug is great for longer ranges. A shotgun works the same as any other centerfire firearm, with a cartridge loaded in the chamber and a firing pin hitting the primer to fire it. The specifics depend on the exact type of shotgun, which can be one of about a dozen types of single-shot actions, single or double barrel, bolt action, one of several types of autoloader or a lever action.

Each firearm will exhibit a preference for a certain load and or maker. The only way to know is to shoot as many as you can afford to find out.

With a field shotgun, the target is placed directly behind the bead. On a trap gun, the target is placed above the bead for better visibility. That is the main difference. Also, the comb is elevated on a trap gun and the stock and butt plate are sometimes adjustable on a trap gun. Trap guns are also heavier to reduce damage to the shoulder due to repeated firing. Trap guns sometimes have ported barrels to reduce jumping of the barrel. Any highly shotgun with a wooden stock and replacable barrels can probably be converted into a trap gun. Just buy a trap barrel and replace the barrel. You can also port the barrel or have the stock cut out to make it adjustable. Honestly, no modifications are needed to a field gun, as long as it is a decent gun. I shoot a field gun for trap and I do just fine.

I bought a Redhead leather leg of mutton style shotgun case last year in very good condition in & out for $150 Can., I consider I got a fine case at a good price. Hope this helps. I also have had for many years a Redhead tan coloured lightweight hunting vest in near new condition ( elasticized shell loops, rubberized game pouch) , have no idea of it's value. Green Jimmy
