Why is the hibiscus plant a shrub?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A hibiscus plant only is considered a shrub or small tree when it matures to a height of 30 feet [9.144 meters]. The word 'hibiscus' is the genus name for over 200 different species. Specifically, the genus may be seen as the rough equivalent of a person's last name. The species may be seen as the rough equivalent of a person's first name.

That shows how closely these hibiscus plants are related. But some are low-growing annuals that live and die yearly. Others are low-growing perennials that take a couple of years to live and die. Still others are higher-growing bushes. Yet others are even higher-growing shrubs or small trees.

What is the Latin name of the senna shrub?

User Avatar

Asked by GaleEncyofAltMed

Senna shrubs used to be classified as members of the genus Cassia spp, within the pulse family, Leguminosae. A more correct classification is considered within their own genus, Senna spp, within the bean family, Fabaceae. As is the case with other family members, senna shrubs are nitrogen fixers. That means that they add to soil fertility by making nitrogen available to the soil and its food web members. They're shape shifters in the variety of forms that their species members offer as herbs, small trees, sub shrubs, or vines. They're sources of ingredients in Thai cuisine and medicine, and of yellow splashes of color in private and public gardens. They're survivors of temperate climates even though they're native to the tropics.

When should tamarix shrubs be pruned?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The need for pruning depends upon the particular kind of tamarisk. The salt cedar or tamarisk [Tamarixspp] may be evergreen or deciduous. The evergreen varieties don't tend to need pruning except in the case of the letter 'd'. That means pruning only when there's damage, danger or disease.

The deciduous varieties may have blooms that appear between June and September, or during the winter. So it depends upon the bloom time. A winter blooming variety shouldn't be pruned until after the bloom. The June through September varieties may be pruned before or after the bloom. But once again, pruning may be done anytime there's damage, danger or disease.

What is a small white bug with black spots that eats leaves off outdoor bushes and plants in south Florida?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I did some digging and found that you MAY be talking about a Citrus Weevil... there are also Citrus Root Weevils which are sometimes white with black stripes... they are all pretty much the same. I saw them too and was wondering if they were harmful. At first ,I thought they were kind of cute and interesting... I mean... how often do you see a WHITE bug? Then I found they are the nasty little jerks responsible for munching on my roses!! I had been WONDERING what was chewing the leaves on my plants! OH they also LOVE money trees!! All the roots of my African violets... HISTORY!! I had had those violets for the better part of 5 years too!! I am going to try my trusty soap spray to repel them... mix 1 tablespoon dish soap in 2 cups warm water. Hopefully that'll work! You gotta do it often because as soon as it rains, it washes away... which is pretty much every afternoon as of late. GOOD LUCK!!

About how far is the distance of allelopathic plants from one another?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The length of the root is the distance of allelopathic plants from one another. The plants in question -- aster, black walnut, broccoli, forsythia, garlic mustard, goldenrod, juniper, Kentucky bluegrass, knapweed, perennial rye, purple loosestrife, sugar maple, sunflower -- may release toxins -- of which the most famous is the black walnut tree's juglone -- to control or inhibit the growth of other vegetation. Their effects -- which may be minimized by well-aerated, well-drained soils -- will be strongest as far across and down as the root system extends for herbaceous plants and the drip line for woody plants.

Do you have to prune before spring?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, pruning does not have to be done before spring. Winter tends to be a time to do pruning since plants will not be growing actively. Plants that bloom on new growth generally will react best to winter pruning while those that flower on old growth generally will respond best to spring or summer trims.
