They set up their base camp in March 1953. The final climb was May 28 and they reached the top at 11:30 am.

The Hillary Step lies at approx 28,840 feet above the sea level, between the South summit and the true summit. It is the last major obstacle before reaching the top of the world.

The Hillary Step is a perpendicular upright mass of rock that is around forty feet in height. To reach it you must climb the South East Ridge route from the Nepal side of Mount Everest.

It was then renamed the Joint Himalayan Committee; this latter committee organized and financed the successful first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953.

Sir Edmund Hillary married Louise Mary Rose on 3 September 1953, soon after the ascent of Everest. They had 3 children but his wife and one of the children were killed in a plane crash in 1977. Hillary was devastated. Later Sir Edmund married June Mulgrew, the widow of his close friend Peter Mulgrew, on 21 December 1989.
