Edmund Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11.30am on the 29th May 1953. He was a member of the British Mount Everest Expedition. He became the first person to stand on the summit of the highest mountain in the world along with Tenzing Norgay, who was just behind Edmund.

If you have money, some expeditions with take you with minimal training, but you will probably not make to the top and if you do you will probably die. You ideally need years of climbing experience that include extreme cold weather and high altitude climbing experience.

Hillary, more popularly referred to as Sir Ed, rose to fame in 1953 as the first man to summit Mount Everest, along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. But the former beekeeper also left his mark in the Antarctic, helping to establish New Zealand's Scott Base on Ross Island in 1957 and leading the first overland vehicle traverse to the South Pole in 1958.

Sir Edmund Hillary died on January 11, 2008 at the age of 88.

He allowed town meetings only once a year, revoked all land titles, ended representative assemblies, and taxed without consent.

It took a lot of planning for Hillary and Tenzing to reach the summit of Mount Everest. They took with them on their climb all the facts and mistakes of the climbs from the 1920's and 1930's. Tenzing also had some knowledge of Mount Everest as he was on it in 1952 with a Swiss team.

The 1996 Mount Everest disaster refers to the events of 10-11 May 1996, when 8 people were caught in a blizzard and died on Mount Everest during summit attempts. In the entire season, fifteen people died trying to reach the summit, making it the deadliest single year in Mount Everest's history. The disaster gained wide publicity and raised questions about the commercialization of Everest.

In November 1847, Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India made several observations from the Sawajpore station at the east end of the Himalayas. Kangchenjunga was then considered the highest peak in the world, and with interest he noted a peak (Everest) beyond it, about 230 km (140 mi) away.
