Skillet formed in 1996 with John Cooper who played in a band called Seraph at the time, and Ken Steorts, who played guitar for Urgent Cry. The two men met through touring together, but the bands they played for disbanded soon after they met. So John and Ken's pastor encouraged them to form their own band as a side-project, and Skillet was born.
