Well...in the Disney Animated Feature version, Maleficent is the name of the "evil" character. It doesn't mention her being a fairy...but just that she is powerful. I would assume she is a 'witch' or 'fairy,' because she does not age and she seems to know a lot about how the other fairies work...but really the only mention of the fairies are the three good ones; Flora, Fauna and Merryweather.

There are MANY. As the ballet was produced in different countries and different decades, alterations were made to suit time and place. Choreographer Marius Petipa originally named the fairies who brought gifts to the christening as Candide, Culant, Miettes qui tombent, Canarie qui chante, Violente, and the Lilac Fairy. The gifts were not objects but characterisitics, reflected in the fairies names and in their choreography. Here is at least a partial list:

Candide - White, Crystal, Fairy of the Crystal Fountain

Coulant - Gold, Fairy of the Enchanted Garden, Fairy of the Woodland Glade. I

have also heard of this variation as the Rose Fairy.

Miettes - Pink, the Crumb Fairy

Canarie - Yellow, Canary Fairy, Songbird Fairy

Violente - Orange - Finger Fairy, Electric Fairy, Fairy of the Golden Vine.

Lilac Fairy - she is the only one of these fairies who seems to continue unchanged. Her gift is wisdom, and she has some power to reduce the spell of the last and
