What are two adaptations of a garden snail?
Some adaptations of mollusks include an operculum that most univalves have for protection, the radula of the moon snail that is used to drill through other shells to get their food, and the jet propulsion movement and ink sac of cephalopods to escape predators.
Yes they have poison glands in their bodies and will eat flesh if given the chance.
What would you include in a container for snails?
If you want to keep snails as pets then you will need:
If your snail is a fully grown garden snail I would suggest that you get a 3.5-4.0 litre container, drill some holes at the top so your snail can breathe (make sure your snail can't escape through the holes though, if you think it can then get an old pair of thin tights (15 dernier is good) and cover the holes). For african land snail you would need considribly larger.
Snails like warm moist conditions, I suggest that you buy a sprayer and set it to mist, when sprayed from a distance little droplets will form on the container which is perfect for a snail. The soil help keep the tank warm by radiating a small amount of warmth.
For decoration and a play area for your snail you can find some twigs in your garden/park. Only choose things that is natural for your snail.
It is very important that you choose the right food for your snail, Cuttle fish bone is a must and any natural chalk that you find will be good to. Generally, snails like to eat vegetables, this is true but they can't have any chemicals on them or your snail will die.
The term is Latin for 'Stomach Foot' and the class includes slugs, snails, and Nutibranks.
You can find snails nearly anywhere especially when it is late and when its been raining. If you are planning to keep snails in the house please look after them because they are so cute.
salt is probably the most gruesome and effective method of killing slugs without getting your hands dirty, yet im guessing that your intending on keeping them out of your vegetable garden in which case salt would be an inappropriate method. your best bet is to go to your local garden centre and buy some slug pellets but if your into economical solutions, you can always crush up egg shells into shards and sprinkle them around your plants so that the shards of shell discourage them as they dont want to crawl over sharp things.
yes because when you pick them up by there shel their foot is attached
How do you know if a snail laid eggs?
Snails lay eggs in the same manner as most creatures in that they come out of an opening in the hind end, they lay the eggs in sticky blobs that sticks to plants or stones and in a fishtank can often be seen on the glass.
Why do snails die when they get salt on them?
Slugs and snails have a very high percentage of their body-weight made up of water, compared to other animals. Additionally, their skin is a much more permeable to water loss as well as ions and other small molecules, this is why they must keep their skin very moist.
When salt comes into contact with the skin of a slug or snail, osmosis drags water out through the cells lining the skin due to the sudden high concentration of a pure salt crystal on the surface of its skin. Certain species can deal with small crystals of salt by excreting large amounts of mucus in the area, reducing contact and water loss.
However, when the salt load is too much, large amounts of water are osmotically drawn out the snail and results in severe dehydration. The snail will lose volume due to water loss and will no longer be able to carry out basic cellular function.
Do snails eat their own babies?
some snails eat their own kind but most do not. However, several species of snails are known to eat their own eggs, even mother's that just laid those eggs! However, they don't eat their offspring once they are born.
Yes. But you have to be careful. (And taste is a secondary concern!) Slugs feed on vegetation, but also decaying flesh and poisonous mushrooms and they can carry meningitis. Like snails, but more so, they would need to be purged (by feeding them on lettuce or bran) and thoroughly cleaned inside and out. Then boiled for maybe 3 lots of 10 minutes, cleaning between each boiling. Then fried in garlic butter. An awful lot of work for little reward and still a slim risk of being ill! Stick to professionally prepared snails!
Sadly there is no name for a snail's baby besides "snail babies."
How long does a giant land snail hibernate for?
Giant African Land Snails have been known to hibernate in any part of the year however most cases of snails going into hibernation happen over the winter when it may become too cold for the snail. Typically they hibernate if conditions in their environment are not suitable (i.e. the temperature, humidity, availability of food and other such factors could cause a snail to hibernate).
No. Slugs are part of the phylum Mollusca (family Gastropoda), which isn't even a closely related. Other members of the mollusk phylum include octopi, squids, clams, oysters, slugs, snails, etc. Arachnids (phylum Arthropoda, family arachnida) include spiders, scorpions, vinegaroons/tail less whip scorpions, pseudo scorpions, and mites/ticks.
Get to snails [same breed] put them in a tank with wet soil plenty of greens and in 1-2 week's they will mate and lay eggs
How do you take care of slug eggs?
I personally had 3 adult slugs. Unfortunately, 2 of them passed away unexpectedly. To this day, I'm really not sure how. The two died after I saw tiny, clear eggs in their tank! I suggest keeping the adults and eggs separate in different tanks because the adults might mistake the eggs for food. In the tank with the eggs, make sure you first put a layer of soil, or buy some eco earth from your local pet shop. I use eco earth for my slugs. After putting the eggs in with the eco earth or soil, add some food source so that when they hatch, they'll feel comfortable. make sure to spray the tank daily, but not to the poingt where the tank is soaking wet, as this will drown the eggs. Lightly mist it instead, and do NOT spray directly on eggs. If your slug gave birth in the summer or spring, the eggs typically will hatch in a matter of 2 weeks to a month. If the slug gave birth in the winter time, like mine did, the eggs will hatch in about 3-5 months. When your slugs finally hatch, make sure to provide food for every single one of them. Don't be upset because a few slugs WILL die. This is not caused by your bad pet caring skills. It is just physically impossible to take care of all of the 25-30 eggs. Do NOT release unhatched eggs, or young slugs into the wild, ESPECIALLY in the WINTER. They will not survive the harsh weather conditions, and they could easily become a bird's snack. Thank you for reading and have a great rest of your day!
Some species of snail certainly will if they get the chance.
