First, you have to understand that the Moon has a tilt in its orbit. Its tilt is large enough to miss the Earth's shadow or the Sun's main stream of light. The Moon has to remove its orbital tilt for solar and lunar eclipses to happen every month. But eventually, the Moon will be far enough that it does not block enough sunlight for a solar eclipse to occur (this is because the moon is moving away from Earth because it orbits the Earth slower than the Earth rotates).

I believe that it is effected by the equinox. Because the sun appears to move faster across our sky's in the winter or slower in the summer this might be the main cause of why a solar eclipse might differ in time. Two things prevent that from happening every year. One, the Moon's orbital plane is tilted about 5 degrees from the ecliptic, which is the path of Earth's orbit. Think of two concentric circles, with one tilted slightly so that the circles touch each other at only two points on opposite sides. So, for a lunar eclipse to occur the Moon has to be at (or very close to) either of the two nodes (the points where the ecliptic and the Moon's orbit coincide), while at the same time, the Sun has to be on the opposite side to produce the Earth's shadow that eclipses the Moon. On top of that, (the second thing), the Moon's orbital circle shifts every year so that the two nodes rotate around the ecliptic about every 19 years. Every year, the Moon's intersection with the ecliptic is shifted about 18 degrees, so from one year to the next, the Moon is in a different place.

The time of a total lunar eclipse can last an hour or more, with the partial phases adding as much as another two to three hours. For example, the total eclipse of the Moon on Feb. 20-21, 2008, lasted a little less than three and a half hours from the beginning of the partial phase, through the totality, to the end of the partial phase. Totality in this case was about 50 minutes.

The duration depends on whether the Moon passes through the center of the Earth's shadow, and the distance between the Moon and Earth at the time (which affects the size of Earth's shadow). Lunar eclipses are more frequently seen because everyone on the night time half of the Earth are in position to view a lunar eclipse.

Solar Eclipses:

For a solar eclipse, the maximum theoretical duration is 7 minutes, 40 seconds (some believe 7 minutes, 31 seconds), but in any case, the maximum duration can only occur, or be observed at the equator.

The partial phases add considerably more time, so that the entire eclipse, seen from any given location, can last several hours. However, the partial phases of a total solar eclipse are much less noticeable to the ordinary observer, and might be missed entirely.

During a solar eclipse, the moon comes between the sun and the earth, blocking view of the sun from some parts of the earth by casting its shadow. The longest this lasts in any one place on the earth's surface is about 6 minutes, but the alignment of sun, moon and earth that throws the moon's shadow on the earth can last for several hours while the shadow moves across the earth's surface.

Adjacent to those places where the sun's disk is totally blocked, where the eclipse is said to be total, there is a wider zone where the sun is never totally blocked, and there the eclipse is said to be partial. Even in places where the eclipse is eventually total, there are times before and after totality when the eclipse is partial.

While it is safe to look directly at a total solar eclipse, which is a very spectacular event, care must be taken to avoid looking directly at a partial solar eclipse. The portion of the sun that is not blocked by the moon during a partial eclipse is so bright that, even though it may not be painful, it can burn the retina (light-sensing cells in the back of your eyeball) literally before you can blink. Depending on severity, such burns can take months to heal, or can be permanent, resulting in vision defects or blindness.

Indirect viewing of a partial solar eclipse can be accomplished by using a telescope or binoculars to project the sun's image on a screen, or by using a pinhole camera projector. Most welders goggles are also insufficient.

A solar eclipse happens at New Moon when the Moon passes in front of the Sun. The Moon is not big enough to eclipse the whole of the Earth so the eclipse is seen only over a strip of the Earth's surface.

The Moon's orbit is inclined to that of the Earth, and usually at New Moon the Moon passes above or below the Sun as seen from the Earth.

When the Moon is at a node, that means that it is crossing the plane of the Earth's orbit, an eclipse can occur if that coincides with New Moon, because then all three are all in a line.

The same applied to lunar eclipses at Full Moon, except that a lunar eclipse can be seen from the whole dark side of the Earth. This makes lunar eclipses seem more frequent.

We don't get a lunar eclipse (earth obscuring the sun to the moon) or a solar eclipse (moon obscuring the sun to earth) every month, since the alignment of the sun, moon and Earth is not exact enough. The moon sun and earth are not on the exact same plane, so most of the time when the moon passes in front of the sun, it is either too low or too high to cause a solar eclipse. Similar story with the moon passing behind the Earth for a lunar Eclipse.
