Are there any deadly spiders in the United States?

While every spider uses venom to catch its prey, only one spider native to Florida has the potential to kill pierce human skin, and cause a life threatening envenomation -- that is the Black Widow. That being said, while there are bites from this spider in Florida (as we see here at the Poison Control Center), in the most recent year that we have statewide data (2008), there were no deaths from any venomous animal. So, while people do get bitten, they generally seek treatment and receive the necessary care in time. While there are confirmed bites of the Brown Recluse in the state, this spider has not been demonstrated to live in South Florida, rather it is brought here in freight and on shipped goods. As far as we know, there has not been an established breeding population of the Brown Recluse in Florida. Its habitat is known to include the central Southern US, and a second slightly different species is native to the Southwest, including parts of California.

Are black widows carnivores?

All wolves are quite clearly carnivorous. Their teeth are designed for chopping instead of grinding. Their intestinal tracts are short, which is common of pure meat eaters. They do not naturally require any nutrients found in plant sources aside from those also found in meat. External Vitamin C and cellulose are of little use to wolves, dogs, and other carnivores. There has been cases of wolves scavenging, but their primary food source is obtained via hunting.

Wolves *can* eat berries and grass, but they gain little nutritional advantage from it.

Would a black widow bite kill a dog?

I had a 100Lb. pitbull (Female) that was bit by a Black Widow. She was lathargic and slept alot for about 3-5 to five days. I knew she was not feeling well but was not sure why, at first. I noticed a small open crater on her back about the third day. She was drinking alot of water and sleeping much. At the end of the week she was doing pretty good and was quite active. I was working about 10-12 hrs. a day at the time and was not very intuitive to what she was going through. I thought maybe she just had a bug. By the weekend she was fine. I washed her and cleaned the inside of her dog house. When I shook out her blanky, a crushed dead Black Widow fell out of it. I was floored by the fact that I was so oblivious to this. After that I became the Black Widow Terminator, at least in the back yard. I found out that her superior metabolism got her through the bite without perminent damage to her. I will say though, I have 2 young pits now, and I am constantly monitoring the yard for Widows. They are only 60lbs........ so why take a chance.

Can a spider lay eggs in the human skin?

Not to freak anyone out including the would be experts but yes is the correct answer. This didn't happen to a friend or a friend of a friend . Its not something I heard through the grapevine. This happened to me while I was living and working in Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. It started as something that resembled a zit until it grew to an unbelievable size with a white head the size of a dime. The pain in that part of my chest was excruciating. It even pained me to raise my right arm. All those stories you hear about clear liquid instead of puss and dozens of micro spiders crawling about? That's what happened. I got up to go to work and while shaving realised my wound had flattened and I was covered in tiny spiders. I don't remember being bitten and the thing popped in my sleep. But I still carry a nice scar on my chest and it creeps me out to know it wasn't just the worlds biggest zit. I had my roommate bear witness and it completely grossed him out. I was checking the Internet to find out what kind spider it was. Was I surprised to find so many would be experts denying this can even happen. Just thought I'd clear the air.
