Stamp Collecting (Philately)

It would be difficult to say without a lot more information. Collections could be worth a few cents an ounce to many dollars per stamp. In order to estimate the value, you would have to either educate yourself on the value or visit a stamp dealer.

George Washington is one of the most common subjects on US stamps. It will take some detective work to narrow down the search. Use a catalog online or through your local library to identify the specific item. It will also provide an estimated value.

The postage rate in April 2009 was at 42 cents. It was raised from 42 cents to 44 cents on May 11th. The second ounce of postage remained at 17 cents.(10/2009)

Postage in 2002 started at 34 cents. The cost went up to 37 cents on June 30th. It was 33 cent until January 1999.

There is a bit of a conflict here. A stamp cannot be 'Mint' and have a postmark on it, particularly from Canada. There are a number of possibilities here:

The postmark is a First Day of Issue and someone asked the postal clerk to stamp them after buying the sheet. Not much value to them as they can't be used for postage and most collectors prefer a full cover with cancellation. You might get a bit more than what a used stamp would bring.

The postmarks are actually overprints. Canada has done a number of overprints to change value or commemorate special events. These could have good collectors value to them.

Someone re-gummed a bunch of used stamps. Possible, but no real reason for it. It is also possible to use a humidor to remove stamps from paper and 'reclaim' the gum on the back. Most collectors would classify these as used stamps.

This is a very common US regular issue stamp.

If you want to buy just one it will probably cost you from 10 to 25 cents at a stamp

If you want to order it by mail, you would have to pay postage and handling in addition.

Dealers get them as part of larger lots for almost nothing per stamp- say 65% face if mint and 1/5 cent if used.

It is the kind of stamp I use on letters if unused or give to kids if used.

They could be obtained off the mail that was coming into the house. Just taking the stamps off the envelope and pasting them in a notebook or on pages. They had great pictures on them, truly being great works of art. There was a lot of history and geography that could be learned as well.

They are still valid, but you have to add additional postage to make up the 44 cent rate. Unless they are the Forever Stamps, in which case you can still use them for up to an ounce of First Class postage.

The "Penny Black" is considered the first ever postage stamp. It was introduced by the British for entirely internal use in 1840. It was called the "Penny Black" because it was black and it cost one penny. The only design was Queen Victoria's head. Other denominations (and colours) were introduced once the idea caught on internationally. The portrait of Queen Victoria was taken from a medal by William Wyon, as adapted in a sketch by Henry Corbould. It was engraved by Frederick Heath and recess-printed by Perkins Bacon & Co.

Currently you can get one for 44 cents. The Forever stamp is worth the cost to mail one ounce of first class mail. It will always be worth that much regardless of how much it costs at the post office.

That will depend on the specific Canadian stamp that you have. The condition, cancellations, what it is attached to, watermarks, perforations and even color variations can affect the value. You will have to consult a postage stamp catalog to find out.

If they are the thin foil impressions, you could probably get a dollar or two for them. If they actually have some mass to them, as in actual weight, say a half oz. or so, they will have the value of the gold itself. Most of them, unfortunately, are a single atom thickness of gold on aluminum with so little gold in them that they are essentially worthless.

The dates simply indicate the years Jefferson was President of the US.

The first US stamp came out in 1840.

There have been dozens of stamps issued with Jefferson on them in many denominations. Consult a catalog to determine which it is.

My guess would be that you have Scott Nr. 805 which is worth a few cents.

Minimal value for this stamp indicates that the cost is in packaging and tracking and not the stamp itself. A dealer isn't going to be interested in purchasing a single copy. You would be better to use it for postage rather than trying to sell it. Or trade with another collector!

There are many imitations and replicas created of the famous stamps.

The minimal value of the stamp which can be purchased used for 15 cents and in mint condition for 80 cents does not compare with the sacrifice these men of God made, and the example that the set that echos through the ages.

There's a good chance that is a "forever" stamp, meaning it will cover the cost of postage for an envelope, even if the price of stamps increases.

It can also be a stamp printed by the post office for an upcoming rate increase. Since they don't know exactly how much will be authorized, they mark it 1st Class Postage and then can sell it at the appropriate rate. This link below will tell you the designs.

Without knowing more about the stamp, it's impossible to answer. You need to include the country, date (if you can find it) and what is on the stamp (who or what is on it). Also a rough idea about the cindition would help in pricing the stamp.
