A Staph infection is a symptom normally associated with surgery. It is a medical complication that comes from several different problems. Staph is not a virus; it is the common name for the bacterium officially known as Staphylococcus aureus. It is a very common bacterium that lives on skin normally and only becomes a problem if it enters the skin. It (as well as strep) is very common in wound infections; Staph is also found in boils, some food poisoning, some types of pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome, mastitis, endocarditis, infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis) to name a few. Hope this helps! Dr. B.
Why does Staph infection reoccur even after antibiotic treatment?
Sometimes particular infections are particularly difficult to treat. Staph can be one of those infections. When a person continuously gets a particular infection one or more factors is usuall involved.
First, the person never got rid of it. If he was given antibotics and stopped taking them then he felt better before the prescription ended and it did not kill all the bacteria. They survived and came back.
Second, he is not washing his hands often enough. By not keeping his hands clean, he gets bacteria on his hands and he reinfects himself.
Third, he eats infected food or eats from infected dishes. He should eat from paper plates and use throw away utensils which should be discarded until the infections have ended. He should only eat food taken directly from cooking utensils or washed in clean water and then peeled.
Fourth, he should see a dentist to make sure it is not coming from an infected tooth.
The entire idea is to get an individual totally away from an infection.

When it's healed up and the infection is not open anymore, you can't transmit it to other people. However, there are different types of staph and one of the most common types stays in your blood and can reoccur at almost any time. One day, you might have a new sore in any random part of your body. Also, any cut that you get (even minor skin abrasions) are susceptible to the infection. Make sure that you are on the lookout for any break in your skin and keep them clean. In addition to antibiotics, try Epsom salt baths on the wound, and Grapefruit Seed Extract (taken orally). Also, make sure the infections are kept dry. Staph thrives in moist conditions, so it's good to let your wound breathe and not just keep it in a bandage all day. Tea Tree Oil is also very good for keeping it clean and dry. Also, you should avoid sugar as it has been proven that sugar helps staff thrive in your blood.
