The Naval Warfare Designator for Submariners is a pair of Gold (Officer) or Silver (Enlisted) dolphins, each one abreast of the bow of a submarine.

There are many variants on the design, though most of us have always preferred the older, traditional design (see my Supervisor page). Some Officer's dolphins also include their specialty within the design, where the bow of a submarine is replaced by the specialty insignia, with the dolphins abreast of it. For example, the Engineer will have an encircled propeller with dolphins on either side, Supply Officer (Chop) a Supply Corps insignia, and a Submarine Doctor an oak leaf with a blue jewel thingie.

Newer variants also show a modern teardrop/cigar shaped hull to signify more modern boats, but I always preferred the old style with the Fleet Boat bow design.

The dolphins are used in the insignia because dolphins historically are considered friends of sailors, and submarines especially. Dolphins are constant companions riding a submarine's bow wave on the surface, and are usually around a boat at periscope depth as well.
