sounds like a bad piston ring. a bad ring will allow oil to enter your combustion chamber and burn during the firing process. the resulting lack of pressure may result in incomplete combustion and poor gas mileage. to check for this, rent a compression tester from your local parts store, advance or Autozone, and check each cylinder in turn by screwing the adapter into the spark-plug hole and turning over the engine. be sure to disconect the distributor wire or the spark plug wires so your car doesn't actually start. if one cylinder has considerably lower pressure than the rest, you have found a starting point.
