The previous answer is incorrect for most modern beds.

It varies from salon to salon based on their equipment. Most tanning beds will be just that... beds. You will get in, pull the top down, and lay there for the duration of your visit. There are also stand-up booths where you will stand, and in most cases, hold on to two handles or hanging loops to raise your arms to avoid tan lines down your sides.

Also, every bed is different. Some beds/salons may have a button that you must push when you are ready to start. This button may be on the bed or on the wall beside it. Some places will give you a few minutes to undress, put your lotion on and get in the bed, then it will start when that timer reaches zero or you press the start button.

Part of a salon consultant's job is to show you how to use the bed, so if you are unsure, just ask :)

At my work all the girls who work at the tanning salon get free tanning. I'm sure it depends from salon to salon. The reason we get free tanning is so we can look tan, if a customer comes in to tan, and they see someone pale behind the desk, they will think the tanning beds at that salon don't work. Basically giving us free tanning makes us a walking billboard, someone will ask me where I tan and I will say my work name, and then they will go there because I look so tan. Simple

The UV light from a tanning bed cannot harm the unborn baby. UV light doesn't penetrate deep enough.

Tanning while pregnant is not something you should because of the heat factor. Just like you should not go into a hot tub when pregnant...you should not tan when pregnant either. A tanning bed creates alot of heat...that heat can make you(and your baby) uncomfortable. Anything that makes your baby uncomfortable is something you want to stay away from...just to be safe.

No--tanning in a stand up bed is actually less harmful to a baby when you compare it to tanning in a lay down bed. Make sure to get a doctors consent before tanning in a bed while pregnant though.

Yes you can get scabies from a tanning bed. Tanning beds are very dangerous and you can get many diseases from them. People shouldn't use tanning beds anymore. I know that I will never use a tanning bed, because I know the consequences of it. You can also get skin cancer and eye damage from it.

No dont use dry oil for tanning, outdoor tanning for some time is a better idea. I am an asian, my color used to be so white that my pals used to call me a snowy vampire with black hair. I apply a thin layer of olive oil after my bath. Olive oil makes the skin more colorful. Do not try tanning beds, or direct tanning in the sun. After prolonged exposure to direct sun heat, my skin gets burnt orange instead of the normal tan, moreover it damages the texure and increases the wrinkles. Use a UV protection cream of SPF 45 to avoid blemishes & wrinkles. Instead of dry oil, try using olive oil, now I look drastically olive.
