Tax Forms

Various forms used by the IRS in conjunction with income taxes such as W-2, W-4, W-9, 1040, 1098, and 1099

If you file a 1099 tax form can you file rapid refund?

Rapid refund and such are done by private companies and are fancy names for very expensive loans. If your paid on a 1099, you were required to make estimated tax payments through the year, and if you overpaid on those, and therefore have a refund coming, I suspect they would give you that loan. But if that's the case, as the last payment was due 12/15, you should have sent less...not sent a lot and then borrowed money at a huge charge waiting to file a return and get it back.

Do you have to pay tax on a capital loss?

No, in fact it reduces any capital loss and even ordinary income (within limits)

How do you fill out the tax form to have the least amount of tax taken out of your check?

The idea is to have the CORRECT amount taken out! Anything less will not change the tax you ultimately have to pay and report, but will subject you to what can be substantial underpayment fees and interest. Why pay more, maybe much more, than you have to? The instructions to Form W-2 provide everything you would need to assure whatever amount of tax you want withheld is done. (Obviously, some things, like FICA, UI, etc are a straight proportion of a calculated amount that you cannot adjust).

What should I claim on my W-2 for pay check tax?

Form W-2 is Wage and Tax Statement. Employers are required to provide/send W-2 forms to their employees generally by January 31st. If January 31st falls on a weekend, the deadline is extended to the next business day.

Refer to your W-2 forms in filling out your federal and state income tax returns. The total amount of federal income tax withheld is listed on Line 2 Federal Income Tax Withheld of Form W-2. The total amount of state income tax withheld is listed on Line 17 State Income Tax.

Copy B To Be Filed with Employee's Federal Tax Return is attached to your federal income tax return. Copy 2 To Be Filed with Employee's State, City or Local Tax Department is attached to your state income tax return. If you file your returns electronically, you keep the state and federal copies of your W-2 forms with your other tax records.

Where can you get copies of federal tax forms?

You can get copies of federal tax forms by printing them online at www.irs.gov/formspubs by clicking on 'Form and instruction number'.

Or you can request them by telephone at 1-800-TAX-FORM [1-800-829-3676]. You'll receive them by mail usually within 10 business days.

Or you can send a request by mail to the Internal Revenue Service, 1201 N. Mitsubishi Motorway, Bloomington, IL 61705-6613. You'll receive them by mail usually within 10 business days.

Or you can pick them up at post offices or public libraries during tax season January-April or at your local IRS office.

Is it legal for an employer to report more paid to an employee on their tax forms than he is acutally paying the employee?

He must report many things you may not consider as compensation...not just what you receive on your paycheck. (And what each type of tax - Federal, State, FICA, unemployment, etc, consider compensation changes with each...so the amount he reports to each will normally be different). This happens to virtually everyone. And of course, as he is liable to pay over the correct withholding for the amount of compensation, and the employer portion of FICA (substantial), UI, disability, etc., etc., on what he reports as compensation, and gets no benefit anywhere I can think of for inflating it - he would have no reason to do so anyway.

How do you get a copy of your 1987 W-2 form?

Form W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement) is an IRS form that the employer is required to complete and to provide to their employees. You're expected to contact the employer directly for any W-2's that you need. Businesses are required to keep all employment tax records for at least four years after the date the tax is due or is paid, whichever is later. So it's possible that some of your previous employers may no longer have your W-2 information. But many businesses follow the 7-10 year rule or longer for keeping records. At any rate, you should contact your former employer directly.

Can payday loan interest be reported on your income taxes?

No. Deductible interest includes student loan, investment, and qualified residence interest. Payday loan interest is considered personal interest. Personal interest isn't deductible.

If you're single with no dependents can you legally increase your withholding allowances so that less money is deducted from your paycheck for federal taxes?

Yes. Form W-4 is Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate. Included with Form W-4 are three worksheets: Personal Allowances Worksheet, Deductions and Adjustments Worksheet, and Two-Earners/Multiple Jobs Worksheet.

In filling out the Personal Allowances Worksheet, Single with no dependents might be able to claim at least two exemptions. One is for yourself. The second is claimed if you only have one job.

You can consider projected tax credits (earned income, education, etc.), adjustments to income (IRA deduction, tuition/fees, student loan interest, etc.), itemized deductions (mortgage interest, etc.) in figuring your allowable number of withholding allowances.

A helpful booklet is IRS Publication 919 (How Do I Adjust My Tax Withholding?). You can print a copy online at www.irs.gov/formspubs by clicking on 'Publication Number' and entering '919' into the Find Box.

If I lost my W-2 forms is there a way to get them off the Internet?

If your employer makes them available to you through the internet at a designated site, then, yes, you should be able to get a copy that way. If your employer is only providing paper copies of W-2 forms, then you'll have to contact your employer for replacement copies. If your employer provides a replacement paper copy, the words "Reissued Statement" are supposed to be written on the new copy. Those words don't have to be written on replacement electronic copies.

Does a single student earning 3132.25 in 2007 need to file a federal tax return and will any taxes be owed?

If you're a single student claimed as a dependent on your parents' (or someone else's) return, you weren't required to file in 2007 if your income was under $5,350. If you weren't being claimed as a dependent by anyone else, you weren't required to file if your income was under $8,750. But if income tax were withheld from your earnings during the year, you should file a return in order to get a refund of that tax. If you didn't file a return in 2008 for a refund of your 2007 tax withheld, you still can file for that year.

What federal tax forms need to be sent to the IRS?

If you're filing paper copies of your tax return, you need to attach all W-2 forms in the designated areas of the 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ. The 1040 series also indicates the Schedules and Forms which need to be attached. For example, Form 1040 line 12 (business income) states "Attach Schedule C or C-EZ." To claim credit for child and dependent care expenses, both 1040 and 1040A state "Attach Form 2441" at line 48 and line 29, respectively.

How do you fill out your income tax form so that you get the most money taken out of your check and have the least money owed when you file your taxes?

If you work for an employer and receive a W2 at the end of the year, you need to adjust your W4 (that is the form you should have filed out before you were employed). You need to put that you are SINGLE where the choices are married or single. The number of allowences you should report is 0. This will put you at the maximum withholding rate. You may also elect to have an extra amount of money withheld from your pay each pay period. This would be a set dollar amount (that you decide) also reported to your employer on a W4.

There is a W4 pdf on the IRS website that will allow you to make the correct entries, and print the completed form. You will then need to turn that form into your empoyer so your payroll files can be adjusted accordingly.

You bought 5000 dollars worth of penny stocks they are now worth 148 dollars can you claim the loss on your income tax?

I am not sure about US tax but in the UK you could claim a capital loss BUT only if you sell the stocks. (If you don't sell then in 10 years they could be worth 100000 dollars)

Also in the UK you could not offset the loss against income only against tax on a capital gain (selling stocks at a profit).

What documents are needed to file a tax return if you own a rental property?

Rental real estate income and losses are entered on line 17 of Form 1040 for 2009. The figure that you enter on that line comes from Form 1040 Schedule E (Supplemental Income and Loss). Generally, your biggest expense for rental property is depreciation. So you'll be attaching Schedule Eand Form 4562 (Depreciation and Amortization) to your Form 1040.

What is the federal tax rate on an EEOC mediated settlement?

Settlements may be taxable or nontaxable, depending on the claim that's been settled. Taxable settlement amounts include interest, compensation for lost wages, etc. There's no set federal tax rate on a settlement. How much tax you'll be assessed depends on your filing status and taxable income. Taxable settlement amounts usually are entered on line 21 (Other Income) on Form 1040.

For more information, go to www.irs.gov/formspubs for Publication 525 (Taxable and Nontaxable Income).

What is the difference between operational lease and finance lease?

The key difference between a finance lease and an operating lease is whether the lessor (the legal owner who rents out the assets) or lessee (who uses the asset) takes on the risks of ownership of the leased assets. The classification of a lease (as an operating or finance lease) also affects how it is reported in the accounts. The differentiation is mostly important for accounting , taxation and financial reporting purposes.

Can you deduct bounced check charges?

Yes, bounced check charges can be deducted, and no, they can't. As one of the expenses of doing business, businesses can deduct bounced check charges for checks bounced by customers. But as an individual, it isn't possible to deduct charges that are assessed by businesses and banks for bounced checks. According to the tax code, you can't receive a tax benefit from an illegal activity, and bounced checks are considered illegal.

How do you fill in line 6 of Part I of Form 4562?

Part I of Form 4562 (Depreciation and Amortization) concerns Section 179 property. That's property that you buy to use in your trade or business and that's either tangible personal property or other tangible property (except buildings and their structural components). On line 6 column (a), give a brief description of the property that you're expensing under Section 179 (for example: office furniture, truck). In column (b), give the cost of that property. In column (c), enter the amount that you're expensing under Section 179. The entire cost of the property doesn't have to be expensed. You can depreciate the amount that you don't expense.

Is military pay taxable?

Yes

Consider that's only basic pay. You'll likely get just as much, tax free, from other sources of pay such as housing allowance, subsistence pay, etc.

Also after a while you can add on family separation pay, sea service pay, hazardous duty pay, reenlistment bonuses. It's a well kept secret how well the military is paid.
