The murderer of Elizabeth Short, or "The Black Dahlia" is unknown.
Over the years over 50 people have confessed to killing her, but the real murderer is still a mystery.
Elizabeth Ann Short or as most know her "The Black Dahlia" was murdered in 1947 in Los Angeles, California. Her murder was brutal. First she was drowned and her body drained of blood, next the unknown murderer removed major organ masses. He severed the body in half near the waist and carved BD (symbolizing Black Dahlia which was her nickname) somehwere in her body. He cut her mouth from ear to ear creating a large smile. Soon after he raped and sodomized her body, then scrubbed it clean and dumped it off in a vacant lot somewhere outside of L.A.
If you see any mistakes please feel free to change it and let me know about it. I find this to be a very interesting murder that has caught my interest.
Although she was sodomized there was no penetration to conclude rape.
It has been said that A jealous Madeline's mother killed her because she looked like her daughter and because she made a porno.
//Actually, the above information is not correct. According to the LA medical examiner who preformed the autopsy on Short, he concluded that death was caused by blunt force trauma to the victim's head. The mutilation was postmortem not antemortem. And although Short's body was drained of blood and scrubbed clean, she did not drown and it is only speculation that she was even in a bathtub.
Furthermore, the above mentioned theory of a jealous woman as the killer is flawed to say the least. The perpertrator is most likely a white male, probably at least 30 years old. He had access to an automobile and a house or residence with a certain amount of privacy. Short was held somewhere before her death and was tortured prior to her death.

Does the Joker's smile have anything to do with the Black Dahlia murder?
Aside from displaying similar injuries no. Heath Ledger's Joker was cut in such a way (fiction). Likewise, when Elizabeth Short's body was found in an empty lot in Los Angeles on January 15, 1947, her face had been cut horizontally through the mouth making it appear that the corpse had a smile.
This type of injury is called a Glasgow Smile, also a Chelsea Smile or Chelsea Grin. It is accomplished by making small horizontal cuts in the corners of the mouth and then beating the victim in the chest and abdomen until the cuts tear back to the ears from the facial contractions. Victims typically bleed to death and are left with a ghoulish grin.
The practice was first utilized in Glasgow during the 19th century, and also in London into the mid to late 20th Century (primarily there by the the Chelsea Headhunters).
The injuries are specific to the Black Dahlia murder and it has been featured in a number of popular public media such as film and comics.
One notable survivor of the Glasgow Smile is actor Tommy Flanagan. Flanagan was jumped outside a bar where he worked when he was younger and wounded in this way.
What was the Black Dahlia crime scene?
The body of Elizabeth Short was found on January 15, 1947, in a vacant lot in Leimert Park, Los Angeles.
In the span of four years, 13 people's deaths would be attributed to the Cleveland Torso Killer. The best candidate was Dr. Francis Sweeney which was put in a mental facility from 1930 until his death. After that, the murders stopped in Cleveland. Most investigators believed he was in fact the culprit. The Black Dahlia was in 1947 so he could not be the culprit and even the modus operandi didn't match.
Was there a connection between the Black Dahlia and Torso Killer from Ohio?
This theory really has it's fans. Nobody really knows since neither killer was ever caught and identified. There were some similarities and may be some evidence that a suspect the Ohio police were interested in might have come west. Most of it is speculation and can't be proved at this late date but everybody loves a mystery.

'Black Dahlia' is the nickname given to Elizabeth Short, a woman murdered in 1947, cut in half by her attacker.

What is the significance of the way the Black Dahlia's face was cut?
Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black Dahlia, was found dead and mutilated in an empty lot in a quiet Los Angeles neighborhood on January 15, 1947. Short's face had been cut in a hideous 'smile', a cut that when from ear to ear.
This method of torture had it's origins in mob type killings and is referred to as a Glasgow Grin, coming from Scotland. It is also called the Cheshire Grin or Cheshire Smile.
This does not mean that Short's killer was mob related but just familiar with the procedure. The corpse was also cut completely in half, severed between the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae.
Was The Black Dahlia case solved?
No.
Elizabeth Short's gruesome 1947 murder remains unsolved.
Jailing the killer, who tortured the poor woman for several days before discarding her bisected and mutilated body on an L.A vacant lot, is unlikely as time passes - he's probably already dead or dying from old age, illness, etc.
Sadly, for The Black Dahlia and her family and friends, they'll never receive justice for this hideous crime. Hopefully no-one else becomes victim to such brutality and Elizabeth's life-taker burns in Hell as punishment.
RIP.
Did the Black Dahlia have Bartholins cyst?
In the year prior to her murder, Black Dahlia victim Elizabeth Short was treated by a Dr. Arthur McGinnis Faugh for a problem with her Bartholins gland. A small gland on either side of the vagina, can develope cysts, and if not treated can be quite painful and many times may reaccure. This may have been confused with the story of infantile genitalia which Short was said to have suffered from.
Second answer.
In the autopsy it was found that she had a small uterus and an undeveloped vagina. If you read the real scripts form the case, you will see how this affected her. It crossed the minds of the investigators that she was killed for flirting but no sex at the end most times saying she was a virgin.
//The autopsy report has never been made public. But the inquest notes were at one time available. Dr. Newbarr's testimony clearly states that Short did not have infantile genitalia. His remarks about her uterus (small) meant only that she was not pregnant at the time of her death, not that she had deformed sexual organs. Although I will not mention his name, a particular crime writer claims to have a copy of the entire autopsy report, this has been debunked and declared the writer as a hoax.//
Third answer
There was nothing bad with her vagina. I found the autopsy report and I quote: It is also interesting to note that Elizabeth Short was believed to suffer from genital defect which rendered her unable to have normal sex. However coroner did not find anything unusual about her reproductive organs so the rumors of genital defects remain unconfirmed.
-Stephane Bourgoin-
//As of 2013, the Elizabeth Short autopsy report has never been released. There was a questionable document circulating said to be the report but was proven a fake and was debunked. How a person could get the real report when so many others, including detectives asigned to the case have failed, is a mystery. This 'report' was included in a book published in France, but could not stand up under scrutiny. As stated above, the treatment for a cyst is a completely different matter of infantile genitalia, which is reported to be untrue.//
At the time of the murder, the autopsy was kept secret. These days you can get almost anything and you don't have to be smart to do so. There was nothing wrong with Elizabeth vagina.

Does author James Ellroy know who killed the Black Dahlia?
Ellroy's interest in the Black Dahlia murder case goes way back when he was a boy living with his divorced mother in Los Angeles. While visiting his father for a weekend, Ellroy returned on a Sunday to find police waiting from him. His mother had been murdered. Ellroy's personal theory was that his mother was murdered by the same man that killed Elizabeth Short in 1947.
Ellroy's mother was last seen alive in a bar having drinks with what was later described as a 'swarthy man'. There is no proof that the crimes were connected in any way.
How did the Black Dahlia get that name?
It seems nobody can agree on this. The most popular theory was that because Beth wore so much black that her friends began to refer to her as the Black Dahlia. But police on the case say that the name was given to her by the press (no individual was named). Another version was that at the time of her murder (1947) there was a well-known prostitute that was called the Black Dahlia and that Short was confused with her. This could also be why many people were under the impression that Short herself was a prostitute, which we know she was not.
A childhood friend of Short's claimed that she did notwear black more than any other woman, and that she favored pastel pinks and blues. If this is true it must be a coincedence that most pictures of her show her wearing very dark clothing. But we may never know for sure. The case is such an old one, people die, move on or forget such details. Any of these theories may or may not be the truth.

Her name was Elizabeth Short. She never got a chance to make a movie.
Why was Elizabeth Short's murder called The Black Dahlia murder?
Yes, murder victim Elizabeth Short was called the Black Dahlia. This name caught on because at the same time that her murder was being reported in the newspapers, the movie "The Blue Dahlia", starring Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd was just released and the title displayed in huge letters on movie marquees. Photos of Elizabeth Short that showed her black hair and dressed in black dresses made the connection, the name seemed to suit her and stuck.
