In the boy in the stripped pajamas, Bruno cannot pronounce the word Auschwitz (the largest German concentration camp) so calls it Out-With

It looks as if the author has confused pronunciation with spelling. For native speakers of English Auschwitz may be a shade hard to spell, but it isn't hard to pronounce. The book was written in 4 days and is poorly researched and not very well thought out.

The author purposely uses Out-With. During an interview he said, "...I decided not to use the word 'Auschwitz' once within the book itself. By removing the word, even though we are clearly there, and all the signs are there, by not specifically basing it there, it broadened it."

The grandmother dressed up and performed a play every holiday.

Because Shmuel is a child, who doesn't know how to seriously hate someone. A child can't stay angry for longer than a couple of hours. And, Shmuel has a very forgiving heart!

"Von Dem fuhrer" means "for the leader" in German. it said that on the grand mothers grave card in the movie the boy in the striped pajamas.

Actually, It is implied that Bruno's father is shot. I haven't heard of the Red Army (referred to as "other soldiers" in the book) getting "really mad" at a German officer.

Simply the Germans or Bruno's father... I also believe that prejudice was also a antagonist type of thing....it's Bruno's father because he makes them move out of Berlin..out of nowhere because of his job as a general soldier.

This is a hard question to answer. you could say it was Hitler, because without him nothing would've happened.

Gretel Hoess is a twelve year old girl who enjoys playing with dolls. She is bossy, rude and sarcastic, especially to Bruno. When the family move away (their Father's new job at a concentration camp, probably Auschwitz.) Bruno and Gretel are home tutored by a man name Herr Listz, who teaches them about Antisemitism and Nationalist Propaganda and in response, Gretel becomes increasingly fanatical to the Third Reich and she throws away her dolls and pins up posters of Nazi Propaganda posters. She also begins to flirt with SS Lieutenant Kotler.

Shmuel goes to Bruno's house with other people from the concentration camp to clean his house. Bruno see's Shmuel cleaning glasses and gives him some food,but a soldier see's him eating and askes Bruno if he gave him the food. Bruno says no to protect himself and the soldier takes Shmuel and gives him a black eye.

She was Bruno's grandmother. She died later in the book.

Because He hired her and didnt want Bruno to say to father that she was saying bad things about her and also because he paid her money when no one else would to give her ill mother the treatment she needed

Absolutely! The book is used in many fifth grade classrooms. The book deals with many difficult issues, but in a child-like or child-minded way. Because the story is written from an 8 year olds perspective, many things are toned down due to a lack of understanding. I am using this book with an entire middle school. If you are still uncertain, read through the book yourself. It will only take about a week or a weekend depending on how much time you have or how fast you read.

John Boyne chose to write about a young boy because the subject of the holocaust can be a very cruel and harsh thing to write about, especially in an adults point of view. So, John Boyne decided to put the main character as a naive young boy that knew nothing of the holocaust. This way, it wouldn't seem as harsh as it would usually be.
