The Cask of Amontillado

Edgar Allan Poe's dark tale of revenge, murder and perhaps insanity. Is Montresor justified in seeking revenge against Fortunato, or is Fortunato simply the victim of a madman's paranoia?

Is there any pathetic fallacy in the story 'The Cask of Amontillado'?

I believe there are at least two examples, if not more of pathetic fallacy, or anthropomorphic fallacy, inThe Cask of Amontillado.

  • One example is as the two men journey further into the crypt and Poe describes the bones lining one of the walls to be laying "promiscuously against the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size."
  • Another possible example could be once Montresor has sealed the entry way of Fortunato's tomb, and he persistently calls to him, with no reply, and he reveals eerily, "My heart grew sick-on account of the dampness of the catacombs."

Bones can't have human sexual behavior and hearts can't actually grow sick in the way implied.

Why did they drink Medoc wine in 'The Cask of Amontillado'?

First, Montresor wanted to get Fortunato drunk so his guard would be down and Montresor would be able to surprise Fortunato to more easily kill him. Second, the reason the wine was specifically a Medoc is that the type of the Medoc Montresor chose was a 'DeGraves' an obvious bit of irony and foreshadowing that the cellar they were in was about to become 'the grave' of Fortunato. A very 'Poe-etic' touch to the story, in my opinion.

In the short story "The Cask of Amontillado"what makes Montresor smile?
