Miller was trying to make an allegory to McCarthyism. The Salem witchcraft scare was easy to manipulate to create the result he wanted and was distant enough from McCarthyism he could talk his way out of a sedition lawsuit or being called out as a communist.

One of the most apparent and obvious conflict appears in the beginning of the Act, when the teenaged girls of the village have been caught dancing in the woods. This is against the religious beliefs of the town. With the word of the girls dancing in the woods, the witchcraft "rumors" are spread. This conflict leads to all other conflicts . . . (The village people getting accused of witchcraft), Abigail had started it... always telling lies and making the situation even worse, that ended up the main conflict.

The second conflict I see as a big table turner is the affair that John Proctor had with Abigail Williams. These two had an affair when Abigail was working in John's house and Abigail believed that if she got rid of Elizabeth Proctor, then John Proctor would become her own. John Proctor HAD an affair with Abigail, but for him it was just puppy love, while Abigail believed it was true love. She told John Proctor that she loved him, and once she gets rid of Elizabeth, they would be free to love each other. John is freaked out by this, but can do nothing to convince Abigail that he is not in love with her. Abigail then accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft and is arrested. John Proctor has the decision of what to do. He knows that he has sinned but does not want to hurt his wife.

Two young girls are in trances, seemingly unable to see or hear the outside world.

- Some of the girls want to tell the adults the truth, but Abigail keeps them from doing so.

-Abigail and John Proctor have had an affair. She still wants to be with him, but he tells her that they can never be together again.

-Proctor and Putnam begin to argue over wood being taken off land.

- Many of the villagers become sure of witchcraft.

- Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft who in turn accuses other women of the town.

a crucible is a metal pot the is used to separate metals. those that are wroth something and those that are not. A crucible is also the name fora witchs cauldron, thus the name of Arthur Millers Text the Crucible.

John Proctor ripped his confession into pieces, because the judge wanted him to sign his name. Proctor refused to because that's his name and he knows he can never have another one his lifetime.

At the end of "The Crucible," John Proctor dies as a martyr to the opportunistic insanity of the Salem Witch Trials. By refusing to lie and confess to witchcraft, he died for honesty, and ends his journey of redemption.

In my opnion in the end, John Proctor ends up being the best Christian from all the Salemites.

Yes he doesnt attend church , and instead he plows. Yes he also comited adultery with Abigail, but he does something diffrent. HE has the courage to actually tell the truth, which is one of the key things in being a CHristian : D

Also when he's in jail and rev hale comes in and askes him if Mary warren ,and other Salemites have touched the devil John Proctor refuses to say anyones name nor point fingers, if proctor wasnt a good christian he would of taken the oppurtunity and could of had revenge on another person but instead he refuses to say anyones name :D

Giles is concerned that his wife's reading is indicative of her being a witch.

Two pieces of information brought out as evidence to use against John Proctor, due to his christian nature are:

1) He does not go to church often, and on the Holy Day of the week (Sunday) he is always working on his crops and tending to them.

2)He could not recite all of God's 10 commandments, which may have questions raised based upon his christianity.

In act 4 he confesses but protects his name by ripping up the confession after signing it.

He revealed that his niece was dancing in the woods in the beginning of the story and later in the end he reveals that both his niece Abigail and Mercy Lewis stole money from him and left the land.
