The Flintstones cartoon lasted about six years : September 30, 1960 to April 1, 1966 .

The Flintstones were originally intended to be a stone age cartoon version of Jackie Gleason's "The Honeymooners" but they exploded into an international sensation that is as popular today as ever. The Flintstones characters are instantly recognizable and are popular costumes for Halloween and other events.

Flintstones costumes are available online or in stores, but it is also not too difficult to make a Flintstone costume yourself. The most popular Flintstone character is Fred, and for him you should start by buying a large orange t-shirt. Cut the ends of the sleeves to make them look ragged, and do the same to the shirt bottom. Take a black article of clothing and cut out some spots to affix to the orange t-shirt. Wear a loose black tie, and while the Flintstones don't wear shoes, practical considerations may require you to wear sandals.

For a Wilma costume just get an extra large white t-shirt and cut it so that one shoulder will be bare and cut the bottom ragged. To make Wilma's trademark necklace, use white balls or Styrofoam and string it together. Finally, put your hair up in a bun and don't forget to apply Wilma's thick eyeshadow!

The Flintstone babies Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm make a cute costume. Pebbles can be made with a t-shirt altered the same way as Fred's but with a V-neck. Wearing a pony tail and holding a rattle will easily distinguish you from her dad. Bamm-Bamm doesn't wear much besides a spotted loin cloth and a sideways baseball cap, so go to the supermarket and ask the butcher for a large cow bone for a dinosaur style club.

Flintstone friends Barney and Betty are the easiest to do. For Barney a burlap bag with the arms cut out and a V-neck laced with strings works with a blonde wig if necessary. A Betty costume is pretty much the same as a Wilma one, except Betty wore blue instead of white and her hair is a 1950's style black bob that you may have to go to a hairstylist to recreate.

But whether you buy or make your Flintstones costume, you'll go Yabba Dabba Do!

I remember the term "Grand Poobah" from the cartoon television show The Flintstones as the name of a high ranking elected position in a men's club. Fred Flintstone and his friend Barney Rubble were members of the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes Lodge. The lodge is a spoof of men's clubs like the Elks Club.
