The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead was perhaps one of the most iconic bands of the 60s and 70s. Jerry Garcia was the frontman for 30 years. Even after Jerry's death in 1995, the rest of the boys still play simply calling themselves the Dead and even now after 40 years together, continue to spread the love, peace and music.

What is the grateful dead song he's gone about?

It is about Micky Heart's dad. He was the money manager of the Grateful Dead and Mickey told Jerry that he wasnt good people. He told him "You know better, but I know him" Jerry did not listen to him and his dad took off with all their money. Instead of getting mad at Mickey, he him stay in the band and told him "Theres noting left to do but smile, smile, smile" His dad was last seen on a steam locomotive. THey created the stealie as a sign for whenever Micky's dad "Lenny Hart" sees it, he will feel bad. "GOING WHERE THE WIND DONT BLOW SO STRANGE"what do u think that means? He was later arrested.

The Steal Your Face sign refers to the event itself. 'Steal your face right off your head."

Does anyone know anything about The Grateful Dead Have some respect for the dead CD It was put out in 1996. Can't find out much about it. Thanks?

when Jerry died in 95 essentially everything was put on hold. I did hear of a studio album they were working on but with Jerry's passing it also was never released. I did hear of a few copies that somehow made it out into the public (maybe demo type cds?). This album was supposedly to be called "Earthquake Country" Most of the songs of this "never" released album on are the 5th disk of the 1st Dead Box Set "So Many Roads" the song "Liberty" is my personal fav hope this helps

Has the Grateful Dead ever play at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium Buffalo NY in the late 70's?

The Dead opened with Help on the Way on May 9, 1977 at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. They closed the show with Sugar Magnolia, then encored with Uncle John's Band. You can download the entire concert for free here: http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-05-09.sbd.connor.8304.sbeok.shnf Of mainstream bands, the Dead is the only act I can think of that allowed their concerts to be freely recorded, and who has made the soundboard tapes available to the public. Because of this, their music will live on forever. Time plays tricks on us, and your memory might blurr the late 70s with the early 80s. If this is not the concert you are thinking of, the Dead also performed there in September of 1981, a show they opened with CC Rider. That concert is available for download here: http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-09-26.sbd.miller.18110.sbeok.shnf Hope this was helpful.

How did the Grateful Dead get its name?

They briefly called themselves The Warlocks, but after hearing of another band having that name, They went in search of a new one. According to Phil Lesh's autobiography, They were flipping through the dictionary and there it was, Grateful Dead. Meaning was something to the effect of " the dead, having no resource when alive, was grateful to whomever gave aid (and resource) to enable "the dead' to recieve a proper burrial. Hence, the "Grateful Dead".

Weren't the followers of the Grateful Dead called Deadheads and Dreadheads originated with Jason Castro fans?

According to Wikipedia the term was in use long before Jerry Garcia and the boys were around and was meant in a derisive manner as someone who got something for free:

[In an 1848 glossary of American words, John Russell Bartlett explained: "Persons who drink at a bar, ride in an (subway) or railroad car, travel in steamboats, or visit the theatre, without charge, are called dead heads. These consist of the engineers, conductors, and laborers on railroads; the keepers of hotels; the editors of newspapers, etc."]

But it is because of the term pothead most likely, also in the early sixties kids were called hop heads and acid heads by the older generations. Deadheads did often get in free sometimes, but the true meaning of the word to any deadhead would more closely resemble a person who gets their high from the BAND, who lived for them or followed them if they could. IT beacame a way of life. The closest thing to hippie since the sixties. There was always a connection between the band and the audience. The band fed off the audiences vibes and the audience certainly fed off the band's vibes.

What is the special name for roadies who follow the Grateful Dead?

The Grateful Dead Roadies seem to just be called "Roadies" because they help the band set up and break down "on the road". If you are thinking of a "Dead Head" this refers to anyone who is a fan of the musical group and their music.

What is the meaning of the grateful dead song ship of fools?

Some say the song was written because of a drug addiction, I agree.

" Saw your first ship sink and drown, from rockin' of the boat,
And all that could not sink or swim was just left there to float.
I won't leave you drifting down, but woh it makes me wild,
With thirty years upon my head to have you call me child."

This is one of my favorite dead tunes, and maybe it's because there is so much passion.

In the grateful dead logo does it spell out grateful dead somehow?

Depends on what 'logo' you speak of.... Some do. But the traditional 'Steal Your Face' logo (skull with lightning bolt) does not

Another Answer:

The stealie (steal your face) was in reference to a band member's relative stealing millions from the band. They wrote a song about it called "He's gone" There is a reference in the lyrics "Steal your face right off your head" That's where the stealie comes from. There is no specific logo of the Grateful Dead that spells out their name but there are some really cool designs out there on shirts and posters that show their name in a really cool artsy way.

~ the "american beauty" logo With the artists ( Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley ) not having any intention to have it appear as something else. American Reality. That is the only thing that comes to mind when asking about an ambigram.

The classic logo SYF was done by Bob Thomas and Owsley Stanley AKA Bear. That logo actually intended to have a type of ambigram and spell out grateful dead in the circle with lettering as you look at it from a distance. It was never done though. That idea was given to the main artist Bob from Bear when creating the design in 1969. The song he's gone was written by Robert Hunter first tiime played in 1971, but the SYF logo actually has nothing at all to do with Mickey's father Lenny Hart, the bands manager at one time.~ TI

Bar grating consists of bearing bars and cross rods. The bearing bars carry or "bear" the weight. The cross rods hold the bearing bars together. The cross rods can be welded, press locked, or swaged.

Grating can also be a verb, you do it by rubbing some article of food (such as a carrot or some cheese) over a grater, the blades of which will shred the food up into bits.
