The Greeks had stored an Ottoman ammunition dump and lots of gun powder in one of the rooms of the temple when it was built. As a result from a Venetian bombardment on the Parthenon on September 28, 1687 the room in the temple caught fire and blew up. Causing an explosion so great the roof was completely destroyed and part of the walls. Majority of the building is still standing and can be seen today atop the acropolis in Athens, Greece.
