He was working for the railroad as a boy of 15 or so. He was running for the train with his arms full, and his boss reached down and grabbed his ears and hauled him up into the caboose. He was deaf, or nearly deaf, in that ear for the remainder of his life.

His parents died when Thomas Edison was going through adult life. They never died when he was born, thats a lie!

(Edit: Actually, it was John Quincy Adams who wrote the Monroe Doctrine. Adams was Secretary of State at the time. It is only named the Monroe Doctrine because he was President.

John Adams wrote much of the Massachusetts Constitution, and "Thoughts on Government." Much of his writings come in the form of personal letters.)

Thomas Edison was a great inventor of the late 19th, to early 20th century. He is not a founding father. Our founding fathers are considered as those who signed the Declaration of Independence, such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and James Madison, to name a few.
