For Derby #135 (May 2, 2009) the owner gets the money, but will be contractually to pay the trainer and jockey a certain fee (usually between 10% or 15% of the purse.) From the courier journal:

If all 20 horses start in Saturday's Kentucky Derby (Derby #135, May 2, 2009,) the total purse will be $2,210,000, with $1,450,000 to the winner. That ranks third all-time. The record purse came in 2005 - the first year Churchill guaranteed a purse at least $2 million. Giacomo netted $1,639,600 of the $2,399,600 purse that year, which included a $200,000 supplementary entry fee owner B. Wayne Hughes put up to make 11th-place Greeley's Galaxy eligible to run. The Preakness is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The track is a 1-mile dirt oval. The race itself is a mile and 3/16.

the New York Handicap Triple or American Graded Stakes Races for thoroughbred racehorses is run by the New York Racing Association at Belmont Park in Elmont New York. these three races consist ot the Metropolitan Handicap, the Brooklyn Handicap and the Suburban Handicap. the four horses that have won the Handicap Triple Crown are Whisk Broom 2 in 1913, Tom Fool in 1953, Kelso in 1961 and Fit to Fight in 1984.

Seabiscuit was a late bloomer, when he was three he was lame and cranky due to overwork and excessive training. To compete at that level he would have had to be winning consistantly against some very tough competition.

If a horse falls in a race it usually is extremely bad. The rest of the horses will keep running but the horse or horses that have fallen most likely are to badly injured and have to be humanly euthanized. There are some cases where the horses do survive and can be healed but to tell you the truth there aren't many.

Syndicating a racehorse is when you buy it's breeding rights before it is retired to the breeding shed. To syndicate a racehorse, its costs a lot of money, and you will own the horse once it is retired.

The Mint Julep is the traditional Kentucky Derby drink. It is made with crushed ice, water, mint, and Kentucky bourbon. Almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are sold each year during the two days of the running of the Oaks and Kentucky Derby.

A total number per year is hard to come by as there really is no set number for horses retiring from racing per year. Some years more horses will retire due to various reasons, while another year fewer horses will retire.

there is no *best* type. It is up to the individual to make their own opinion about that.

If you are looking at the type for the best, or easiest breeding, I would say arabians. They are very easy to breed, and have been used to make improvements to lots of other breeds.
