The Prius was 'invented' about 1992 as this is the first mention of the vehicle to become the Prius. The first rendition of the car used ultracapacitors to store electricity but this was not good enough, so they began developing batteries, settling on NIMH. The car was first sold in Japan in 1997 and they decided to bring it to the USA in 1998, but the engine and transmission interfered with the steering wheel change to the left side. It took two years to fix it to mount the steering on either side. It was first sold in the USA in 2000. This information can be verified various places on Prius history on the internet. NIMH battery technology was then purchased by Standard Oil, who along with Toyota, prevented cars from using the battery to power cars over 40% by NImH batteries. The last EV1 vehicles were powered 100% by this battery, along with the Rav4 and many other types of vehicles which had to be destroyed or be sued. The patent runs out in 2015 so Lithium ION batteries are being developed. It is against the patent rights to have any fully powered car using NIMH batteries. Thankfully, the Tesla has made it using LiIon batteries.

Why are there so many used late model Toyota Prius' on the market but hardly any other used hybrids?
Probably because the Prius was the first hybrid produced that was more than a 2 passenger vehicle. Also it was a few years before anyone else made a vehicle to compete with it, so therefore there are many more of them on the road and the Prius is the only hybrid that will have 3-4 year old vehicles around. And 3-4 years is the age when a lot of people trade vehicles in on new ones.

To disable traction control on the prius:
1) Turn the car to ignition by pressing START twice without pressing the brake.
2) Floor the gas pedal two times (two full top to bottom pressings)

4) Again press the gas pedal two times
5) Push PARK and press the gas pedal two more times

Added Note: Most Prius-specific sources that detail this procedure, also include a very clear disclaimer: WARNING: The shop manual apparently states in no uncertain terms that this procedure must NOT be used to drive the car as damage to the transmission could occur due to traction control being defeated.
