Yes sam finds the tomb of the primes and holds the matrix but it turns to dust. Still beleiving that he could save optimus he gathered up the dust in a sock and took it with him to optimus' body that had been dropped in the desert. However the Decepticons try and stop them and while trying to get to optimus sam dies from an explosion. But then he has a sort of outer body experience where he meets the primes who sacrificed themselves to stop the fallen and they say the matrix is earned not received. They bring him back to life and give him the matrix and sam combines it with optimis' spark. He is just getting up when the fallen rips the matrix from him and optimus falls. But one of the older transformers gives optimus his parts and optimus kills the fallen and defeats megatron and starscream
