How do you get your ex racehorse standardbred to stop trotting so fast?
Possibly dont post as high
One thing that Clinton Anderson does is just trot them until they learn to conserve their energy and trot slower. He actually uses this for a slow lope, but it works at the trot too. you could also do transitions. Trot a few strides (less than 5) then walk for a bit, then trot, then walk, then trot, then walk. This gets the horse so that he doesn't build up sped because he knows that he will have to go to the walk very soon. You could also try troting ina round pen. The smaller enclosure will kind of shut the horse down. Horses are more inclined to go fast when in an open area, and the opposite is true. You could also use poles. If you place them shorter than your horses normal stride, she will have to adjust himself to take shorter strides and therefore trot slower.

The lope also known as the canter is a 3 beat movement that is slightly faster then the trot and slower then the gallop, although all horse have different canters (some less easy to ride then others), I would try to get the fastest trot you can with out braking inot the canter and try to grip with your legs as much as you can to where it looks as if you're bum is glued to the saddle. This will stregthen you're legs and help you be more ready for the lope. as try to lot of lunges and other exercises not on the horse to strengthen you're legs. Also try counting this might calm you done when you're loping, 123,123,123,123... this can also help you focus. good luck loping!

I have a 15 year old ex trotter that can trot, but sometimes won't.She can canter, so if I kick her on she will canter. If I bring her back to the walk and try again she still paces.I was thinking of trying trot poles, or tight cirlces. As well as going up hills and going to the beach and making her go through the sand, because all these things make horses trot. I need her to stop pacing because recently she will not trot, but will always pace. But do you guys have any opinions or any ideas? Please share.

To preform the sitting trot you should already have been riding at a posting trot and developed a good sense of balance. Begin by sitting deeply but lightly in the saddle with your weight in the balls of your feet and lightly wrap your legs around the horses barrel. As the horse trots try to let your ankles and knees absorb the impact but not bounce. You should be able to stay steady in the saddle enough to do a sitting trot.
