How do you train a thoroughbred horse to trot and canter?

User Avatar

Asked by Jesidaun

You can train a horse to canter because they dont know the diffrance between running and catering. The other thing that needs to be done is training your horse to get on the right lead. You can do this my pushing in the horses side with your inside leg and then pull there head to the right with the outside hand. You can't train a horse to trot but you can train them the cue to trot.

How do you get a horses to trot in-place?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You start by teaching them basic dressage. Teach them to push back to front, and then as you work up the ranks, you can learn collection and through collection - the Piaffe...

There are "cheating" ways too but the TRUE trot in place is the Piaffe. It is an upper level Dressage movement.

How many acres would you need to build a one mile oval racetrack?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on what the purpose of the kind of racing is proposed to be run on the track. A road course, which there aren't very many NASCAR racews run at requires the largest amount of land. This is the only kind of track were a driver actually turns right. Next, is the super speed ways like Daytona or Atlanta. Then you got "The Mile" tracks like Dover. Then there are the short tracks like Richmond or Darlington.

What makes the track size so interesting is the specific strategies associated not only with the tracks size, but also the shape and surface.

Finally, the amount of land needed must also take into account the size of the space necessary to safely support the crowd of the venue's events.

How many miles can a horse trot in a day?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Different horse will have different endurance levels. Some horses can only move fast for short periods of time, others for long periods of time, e.g., the Arabian.

Trotting is slower than the gallop, but trotting for long periods of time is actually better exercise.

The miles that a horse can trot a day depends strongly on that horses fitness, breed, age and conformation. That is a question that has more than one answer, and it highly depends.

Hope this helps a bit,

Can race horses break down?

User Avatar

Just as the starting bell sounded and the race began, Ruffian hit her shoulder extremely hard on the starting gate. She recovered quickly, but was obviously in pain and leaning more heavily on her right foreleg compensating for the pain. The first quarter-mile (402 m) was run in a blazing 22 1/5 seconds, with Ruffian ahead by a nose. Little more than a 1 furlong (201 m) later, Ruffian was in front by half a length when both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg snapped. Vasquez tried to pull her up, but the filly wouldn't stop. She kept on running, pulverizing her sesamoids, ripping the skin of her fetlock as the bones burst through, driving the open wound into the sting sand of the Belmont track, tearing her ligaments, until her hoof was flopping uselessly, bent up like the tip of a ski. She was known for her incredible love of running and unwillingness to lose. She had never before been behind in a race. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruffian_(horse) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsi_ixx4pAY

How can you get a horse while riding to do an extended trot?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well it is easy all you have to do is give your horse some more leg and then if you want to go slower you will pull on you reins and you will probaly realise how much faster your horse was before. its good to practise doing this aswell because your horse will probaly listen to you more , and he/she will find it easier to do this and you wont have to be kicking him/her to get him/her to trot.So i hope you find this a good answer because this has worked for me and if you take riding lessons just ask your instructor to help you because that is what they are there for! Good luck

How do you know if you are on the right diagonal in trot?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

From April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: Diagonals were created to enhance and improve the movement of the horse as you post. Diagonals allow the outside front leg (in a bend) to extend farther (it has more distance to travel) AND to allow weight OFF the inside leg during the rise of that leg, since it carries the majority of the weight when circling or bending. “Rise and fall with the front leg on the wall” is often used to describe ‘when’ to rise the post, but when no wall is present, you rise with the outside front leg to the bend you are riding. If you are riding a straight line, you can ride either diagonal, especially on the trail. To keep you and your horse from tiring quickly or getting sore, change your diagonal often.

With the Norman stock not fast enough for the French, they started breeding that horse with English thoroughbreds.
