The 'ukulele' is generally traced to 1879 with the arrival of Portuguese laborers from the island of Madeira. They brought with them an instrument called the machete, which became the 'ukulele'. By 1884, Augusto Dias was advertising as a luthier in the Honolulu City Directory. It was popularized on the US mainland at the Pan-Pacific Expo of 1916, held in San Francisco.
