US Banknotes

US Notes were a form of paper money issued until the early 1970s. They were distinguished by the use of red ink instead of green. Please see the Related Question for more information.

It's inside the Federal Reserve Seal, located on the left side of the bill's front, very much like the seal on a $1 bill. The issuing district is shown in small type surrounding the large district ID letter.

The term "issuing district" does NOT mean where the bill was printed, simply which Federal Reserve District requested and distributed it. All 1976 $2 bills (in fact, all US bills up till 1991) were printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington.

They didn't make in 2001. The last year they made them was 1963. If you're talking about the ones you see on tv or in coin catalogs , they are either cardboard "copies" layered in silver , which are worthless , or the more reputable companies make "copies" out of .999 pure silver about a 1/4 inch thick and about the height and width of a dollar bill , and worth little more than its weight in silver . Keep in mind when buying a replica of United States currency the word "COPY" has to be stamped on the piece by law to make it legal to sell , but they tried to hide it

1933 is a relatively rare date for $1 bills. It's probably worth $20 or more. One thing to keep in mind is that the phrase "In God We Trust" wasn't added to paper money until 1957, so the lack of it on your bill doesn't give it any extra value.

As of 08/2012 it would almost certainly be an 1870 to 1874 series $5 National Gold Bank Note. These retail anywhere from $1000 in worn condition to nearly $9000 if almost like new.

Washington's portrait first appeared on a $1 bill in 1869. His image and others were used on $1 bills until 1918 when it became permanent. The familiar portrait by Gilbert Stuart was adopted in 1923.

FWIW the bill was actually printed in Washington at the request of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank.

To determine if a 1934 A $20 bill is real, examine several key features. Look for the watermark of Andrew Jackson, which should be visible when held up to the light, and check for the security thread embedded in the paper. Additionally, inspect the bill under UV light; real currency will exhibit certain features that fluoresce. Finally, feel the texture of the bill; genuine currency has a distinct, slightly rough texture due to the use of high-quality cotton and linen paper.

Despite its age, a circulated 1974 U.S. $5 bill is only worth five dollars. A nice uncirculated one might retail for $7 to $8 or so.

The value is more dependent on the year (series) of the bill. The serial number by itself isn't enough information.

Both terms are correct. Most of the world refers to paper currency as "notes" and from a strict viewpoint, so does the US Treasury. But common usage in the US is to call them "bills".

It's just like the way we all call 1¢ coins "pennies" even though the last true 1-penny coins were minted during colonial times.

The US Mint only makes coins so a bill can't have a mint mark. In 1934, all US paper money was printed in Washington. Since 1990, bills have also been printed in Fort Worth.
