There is no official ranking of his pictures - which are masterpieces and which are not. Some people say all his paintings are masterpieces. So any answer to your question must be subjective and vary according to who you ask.


My vote goes to The Potato Eaters from 1885.

They are simply called 'Sunflowers' or 'Vase of Sunflowers'.

Vincent van Gogh (30 March 1853-29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colors an demotional impact. He suffered from anxiety and increasingly frequent bouts of mental illness throughout his life, and died largely unknown, at the age of 37, form a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Little appreciated during his lifetime, his fame grew in the years after his death. Today, he is widely regarded as one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. He produced more than 2,000 artworks consisting of around 900 painting and 1,100 drawing and sketches.

Theo Van Gogh was Vincent's younger brother. He was an art dealer and one of Vincent's closest friends. Much of what we know about Vincent we know because of the letters he sent to Theo. Along with the emotional support, Theo was of great financial support to Vincent throughout his brief art career. Vincent only sold one of his paintings during his lifetime so Theo provided the money for his livelihood.

This is like asking, "Why do Christians believe in God?" Only not as serious. Van Gogh paints things because of experiences, observations, etc-- The same reason everyone else paints everything. You cannot pinpoint one reason why one artist makes every painting. There's a reasoning behind all of them. The only way you would be able to know the exact answer to this question is if you spoke to Van Gogh directly and asked him why he made each and every painting that he made. Simple as that. Sorry for the overly long answer, but it's very difficult to explain in few words without sounding mean or harsh.

At the Academy of Antwerp he was registered but very seldom attended classes. In Paris he studied in ther painter Fernand Cormon's studio for a few months.

Although it is said Van Gogh only sold one painting in his life time, he did sell a number of drawings. A few years before he died he became quite notable and in the art society of France people began to admire his expressionism.

Otherwise visit a local art shop who may have some still life paintings and if not they will know the best places to look in your local area.

Irises was painted in the last year before his death in 1890, before his first attack at the asylum. He called the painting 'the lightning conductor for my illness' because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint. To get to the answer, Irises was painted so van Gogh felt calm and serene. He needed or wanted to have a peaceful sense while he was in the asylum.

Van Gogh traveled from place to place and didn't call anywhere his home town.

He was born in the Netherlands, but lived in Paris, Arles, and other locations in France for most of his life as an active painter and artist.

Highly doubt it. Although he was in in Paris until early 1888 (tower construction began in 1887), he spent his final years in the south of France. The tower was completed in 1890, the year he passed. I wonder if he ever saw it completed?

On July 27, 1890, van Gogh shot himself in the chest in a field at Auvers-sur-Oise. The shot was not immediately fatal and van Gogh walked back to the Ravoux Inn where he died two days later on July 29, 1890. He was just 37 years old.

The last known sale of this painting was in 1990 when it was sold at auction in Christie's in NYC for US$82.5 million. I don't know the exact figures, but it sold originally for more than any painting had ever been sold for to the time.
