What key is the viola in?

You tune the viola to the high A, to the A string, Tune the A string to the D string, D string to the C string. C string to G string, which is the lowest and thickest string. Make sure to make sure that there isn't a sound like wa-wawa-wa-wa-wa. And the bow is on both strings.

How is sound made on a viola?

Either the player's fingers pluck the strings or he or she uses the violin's bow to rub on its strings, thus creating vibrations.

The vibrations of the strings enter the violin's body through the bridge and are transmitted from its base to the back of the violin via the sound-post.

The sound-post is a short wooden stick or peg that is placed just underneath the bridge inside the body, where it is wedged between the front and the back surfaces of the violin.

Thus both the front and back of the violin are made to vibrate, making the sound become greatly amplified.
Sound is produced by a violin when the strings are caused to vibrate. This vibration happens by either plucking the string or running a bow across it.

How has the viola changed over time?

There have been many. Originally, the violin design was an improvement upon a viola de gamba family. From there, it's shape has been significantly refined.

Aside from technological improvements in strings, mass production, etc., there are many other improvements.

Using a standard of a baroque violin (the really old-school style), I'll list the major updates.

The two most notable structural changes have been the sound-post and the bass bar.

The sound-post (also known as the soul-post) is a small wooden post that is placed inside the violin, somewhat tightly between the front and back. The theory is that it helps both "plates" resonate together, with a focus on the higher frequencies.

The bass bar is tacked to the inside of the top of the violin, running about half the length and about as wide as a pencil. The bass bar brings out the lower frequencies.

External updates from a baroque violin to a modern one include the chin rest, and the shoulder rest.

The chin rest is firmly clamped to the bottom edge of the violin, allowing the player to either rest their chin, or use their chin to hold the violin between the chin and shoulder, which allows for greater freedom of the left hand, which no longer needs to support the violin.

The shoulder rest is a completely external system, used in conjunction with the chin rest. Some players will opt to not use a shoulder rest at all, some will use a very small pillow, or a cloth, or a combination. Generally, though, a shoulder rest lifts the violin and allows it to fully project sound, where a pillow, cloth, or no shoulder rest may result in a more muted sound (albeit unintentionally).

More recently, fine tuners have been added to the tailpiece for a greater degree of control in tuning.

There are also very modern changes, including electric pickups for a traditional violin (for electric amplification), and completely electric violins, some with pretty wild shapes, and some versions have more strings, allowing for a complete range of cello, viola, and violin on a single instrument.

What is the difference between a viola and a viola d'amore?

No, there are several different differences between the instruments in the viol, or viola da gamba, family and those in the violin family.

Some of the differences that actually affect playing or sound are:

  • The viol family has frets, but the violin family does not.
  • The viol family's sound boxes are deeper than those of the violin family.
  • The viol family's strings are under less tension
  • The bows of viols are held with the palm facing upward, those for the violin family are held with the palm facing down.
  • Even the smallest viols are played with the instrument held vertically.
  • Viols usually have six strings; violins usually have four.
  • The bow of the viol has a convex curve; that of the violin is concave.

There are a number of differences that do not affect sound or playing, and are mostly cosmetic. Among them are these:

  • The shoulders of the viol slope into the neck; those of the violin meet it at a right angle.
  • The viol has a flat back, but the violin's back bulges.
  • The viol has a carved human head or other individual device at the top of the peg box, but the violin has a scroll fiddlehead.

The instruments are also used differently. The viol is usually played in consort, as a member of a group that is not intended to solo, and so its sound is not intended to stand out from other instruments. The violin is intended to be more versatile in this respect, making it more suitable to be a solo instrument for a virtuoso.

What are the ranges of the viola?

The viola range is roughly from the c below middle C to the C two octaves above middle C. However, as with all instruments the upper range varies on the capability of the player, as, unlike woodwind instruments, there is no defined upper limit.

How does the viola work?

You can either pluck the strings by putting your thumb on the right if the finger board and pluck the C,G,D,or A string or bow it. Bowing it is a little bit harder than plucking it. before you put your hand on the bow make a thumb bump by bending your thumb forward a little, then place your thumb by the frog (the big black thing at the end of the bow) then place the bow on any string and either push forward or pull back on the string and then place your fingers of the left hand on the string you are playing on and it makes the sound go higher A viola makes it's sound by the strings vibrating

How do you play a viola?

Basically, the viola is played like a violin. Hold the instrument up with your jawbone, via a chin rest and shoulder rest, and finger with your left hand. Bow with the right hand. Music is writen in alto clef--a different clef from all other instruments. Generally, slightly more pressure is needed for bowing and fingering than for violin due to the thicker strings and slower response. Also there is a bigger reach in the left hand because the string length is longer. For best results, I would strongly suggest getting a private instructor. Oh--and practice, practice, practice! and you have to like what you are doing or else it's gonna be really hard. If you are interested in learning the viola, it'll be easy.

It is true, playing the viola requires practice and an instructor to teach appropriate technique. Without an instructor it is all too easy to develop bad habits that can cause bad sound or even physical injury like carpel tunnel! There is a lot more that goes into actually playing a viola than can be told on an answer here. It has to be experienced physically.

Where did the viola come from?

The viola is an descendant of the Vielle family of instruments which originated in Italy in the mid to late 1400's. (it is not known exactly when the Vielle family was invented or by whom.) These instruments were called Fiedel in Germany and were played "on the arm" leading to the name "Viola da Braccio" in Italy (to differentiate them from the family of "viola da gamba", which were played with the instrument resting on the legs). The closest relative to the viola is the Violin. (The Viola d'amore, which was used in the Baroque period, and was played in the same manner as the violin and viola, but had 6 or 7 strings which were fingered on a fingerboard with frets like the Viola Da Gamba, and had additional sympathetic strings under the fingerboard which vibrated 'in sympathy' with the bowed, fingered strings.) The Viola is the Alto of the Violin Family. It also fills the part of tenor, when another violin is filling the voice of alto (i.e., in String Quartets and symphony orchestras). Attempts at a Tenor viola produced an instrument so large that it could not be played under the chin, and was held similarly to the cello. The earliest iconographic evidence of a viola is in the 1534-5 frescoes in the dome of the Sanctuary of Soranno. The earliest known surviving viola was made in 1560 by Andrea Amati.

The viola has been treated as a solo instrument right along with the Violin. In the Baroque era, the solo potential of the instrument was realized by composers such as Telemann, Vivaldi and J. S. Bach, who wrote several concerti, sonatas and other solos for the instrument. Often, composers of the era claimed the viola as their favorite of the violin family.

What is a d sharp on a viola?

An F Sharp is a note on the viola. To play this note, you put you second finger on the D string (2nd highest string) and it will either play an F natural, or an F sharp. The F finger would be touching the third finger, the G note. If you are playing an F natural, The F finger would be touching the first finger, the E note. Make sure that when you are playing the F Sharp note, there should be a space between the F Sharp note and the E note, your first finger.
