Where was Mary the mother of Jesus buried?

The Blessed Virgin Mary was believed to be buried in Kidron Valley, on the foothills of Mount of Olives. There is, however, no body because she was Assumed body and soul into heaven either just before her death (the position taken by most Roman Catholics), or shortly after (the position taken by Eastern Catholics and Orthodox; this is called 'The Dormition of the Theotokos')

There are two tombs that are attributed to Mary. The first is a tomb located in the Kidron Valley, on the foothills of Mount of Olives, near the Church of All Nations and Gethsemane garden, originally just outside Jerusalem. Another possible tomb of the Virgin Mary is near Ephesus. We do not know which, if either, of these tombs is the correct one. However, if Mary had a tomb into which she was placed, it was not used for long, if at all.

There are two thoughts here and the Church has left this question open:

1.) Mary did not die but was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven when her time on earth was completed.

2.) Mary did die and was buried. A short time (some say 3 days) after her death, she was assumed into heaven.

Neither of these answer contradicts the doctrine of the Assumption.

What did the Virgin Mary do when she was young?

There is nothing in scripture about Mary's childhood and nothing really credible in other writings. The Protoevangelium of James, is an apocryphal gospel probably written about AD 145, which expands backward in time the infancy stories contained in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and presents a narrative concerning the birth and upbringing of Mary herself. However, there is no verificaton from other sources concerning the validity of these stories so they must be considered dubious at best.

She was then returned to her parents.

Did Mary mother of Jesus have other children?

Catholic / Orthodox / Catholic Anglican answer: no.

Protestant answer: yes.

Qualifier: 1 Corinthians 7:2-5 (New International Version, ©2011)

"But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control."

The consummation of marriage is the two partners becoming "one flesh", and if a couple do not mate then they are not married. God told Joseph to marry Mary. There are also numerous references in the bible to Jesus' siblings.

What are the 3 miracles of the Virgin Mary?

Hail Mary, Hail Holy Queen, Memorare, and the Magnificat are the well known prayers to the Virgin Mary.

Where in the bible can you find Mary's mother?

We can only work with tradition to assume Mary's age. The Bible does not state her age. If she could conceive, then we must assume she was at least 13, although it has only been more in this past century that puberty has set on earlier and earlier, even by over a year compared to a 100 years ago. Thus, 14 years old would be the youngest we could realistically see Mary getting pregnant by the Holy Spirit. And then we add a couple years on still because she was already betrothed to Joseph and he wanted to put her away when he heard she was pregnant. He didn't want to stone her, so he obviously had known her for a while as opposed to just a girl awarded to him recently for a wife AND it is VERY unlikely a 14 year old is desiring to be promiscuous enough to want to go have sex when she ALREADY had a husband waiting. Thus, using simply this logic, I'd say Mary was at least 16 when she got pregnant and we could say she was a 17 year old woman when she became a mother to a baby. I hope that helps. Still, you'll hear people say, "She was probably only 13!" This has minimal support, but sounds outlandish enough to make people nod their heads as if they too know of this sad state of affairs in those barbaric times.....

Did Jesus die a virgin?

The earliest gospel, the Gospel of Mark, never mentioned the birth of Jesus, so a virgin birth seems not to have been necessary. However, virgin births were commonplace among the ancient gods and godmen, so when the authors of Matthew and Luke wrote about the bioirth of Jesus it was natural that they would portray Mary as a virgin.

How did Mary the Mother of Jesus become a saint?

In the early days of the Church, people were declared to be saints by acclamation when they were recognized to have lived holy lives -- the word "saint" means "holy one." We know many of these people from scripture, such as Mary, the apostles, and Stephen.

As time went by the early Christian martyrs also came to be recognized as saints, as did others who in one way or another lived lives that were regarded as heroically virtuous.

There was no official process of canonization back then, so there was no universal standard by which to discern whether a person was in fact a saint. By about the year 1000, the Church took over the process and established standard guidelines of discernment with the pope making the final proclamation of sainthood. When this happened, the new saint's name and feast day were added to the list, or "canon," of feast days on the Church's liturgical calendar.

St. Mary was never formally canonized. She was considered a saint from the very beginning of the christian era. She is a saint because she beared a child (jesus christ) and protected him from day 1 when she never lost her virginity. she could have died but instead she listened to angel Gabriela. She helped others all of the time and always respected God with almost no sins.

Where has the Virgin Mary appeared?

Roman Catholic Answer:To the best of my knowledge there are thirteen approvedMarian apparitions, following is the list of cities where she appeared followed by the year:

Guadelupe - 1531 appeared to Juan Diego

Paris - 1830 appeared to Sister Saint Catherine Laboure

Rome 1842

La Salette 1846 appeared to Melanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud

Lourdes 1858 appeared to Bernadette Soubirous

Pontmain 1871

Pellevoisin 1876

Gietrzwald 1877

Knock 1879 appeared to fifteen people in Ireland

Fatima 1917 appeared to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco

Beauraing 1932

Banneaux 1933

Syracuse 1953

Usually the Blessed Virgin Mary appears only to the humble, like children and peasants, and only when there is great need. The way to tell if an appairation is real or not is to look at the message. The only message that Our Blessed Lady ever gives when she appears is to Look to Her Son, to pray very much, and to offer sacrifices for the conversion of poor sinners.

Additional AnswerThere is more to this answer...

there are actually 8 approved and 11 additional in the 20th Century alone:

A statistical analysis of the 20th Century Marian apparition directory reveals the following results...

During the twentieth century, there have been 386 cases of Marian apparitions. The Church has made "no decision" about the supernatural character regarding 299 of the 386 cases. The Church has made a "negative decision" about the supernatural character in seventy-nine of the 386 cases.

Out of the 386 apparitions, the Church has decided that "yes" there is a supernatural character only in eight (8) cases: Fatima (Portugal), Beauraing (Belgium), Banneux (Belgium), Akita (Japan), Syracuse (Italy), Zeitoun (Egypt), Manila (Philippines) (according to some sources), and Betania (Venezuela).

Local bishops have approved of the faith expression at the sites where these eight apparitions occurred. Besides the eight approved apparitions, there have been eleven (out of the 386 apparitions) which have not been approved with a "supernatural character," but which have received a "yes" to indicate the local bishop's "approval of faith expression (prayer and devotion) at the site."

When was the Assumption of the Virgin Mary first celebrated?

The bodily assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the next obvious and nesseccary step in salvation history, that it's a wonder it took so long to declare it dogma (or, official church teaching). Throughout modern history, the Madonna has been appearing in bodily form, to warn about wars (the Fatima apparitions), to help convert the pagan population of the "New World"--it wasn't new to the natives (Our Lady of Guadalupe), and she appeared to Bernadette at Lourdes. I don't believe any of these apparitions would have held as much sway if the messages were delivered by a disembodied spirit

Is Mary the Mother of the Trinity?

The Gospels refer to the brothers of Jesus as James, Joses, Simon and Judas, and that he had sisters. So, Mary the mother of John would not be the mother of Jesus. John Mark, whose mother was Mary, was not related to Jesus. The only reference to a similar relationship is when Jesus supposedly left His mother Mary in the care of John the disciple.

//If by John, you mean John the Baptist, then his mother's name was Elizabeth, she was related to Mary, making JTB and Jesus cousins.//

Who took care of Mother Mary after Jesus?

The Apostle John When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. (NKJV) John refers to himself as the "disciple Jesus loved" several times in his gospel in order to keep the readers' focus on Jesus, and not call attention to himself.

Was the Virgin Mary Syrian or Jewish?

Virgin Mary (Mariam) was Muslim in the universal sense of Islam religion that means full submission to God, the one and only one God without a partner or son or companion. Virgin Mary is the only woman mentioned explicitly by name in Quran. There a full chapter in Quran title by the name Mary (Mariam). She was mentioned in Quran that she is the lady of ladies of all worlds.

What is Mary's title that describes her relationship to the Church?

Catholics honor Mary in a special way because she was the mother of Christ. Since Christ is God, Mary is then the Mother of God. We also believe that she was conceived without original sin, as she told St. Bernadette in 1858 ("I am the Immaculate Conception"), and remained sinless throughout her entire life. This makes sense if you compare Mary carrying Jesus in her womb with the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Mary can be considered the "new Ark of the Covenant" in the sense that in the Old Testament, the Ark of the Covenant contained the Jew's most sacred items: the Ten Commandments (Deut 10:5), the staff of Aaron (Num 17:6), and manna from the desert (Ex 16:32). Now, Mary held in her womb the Living Word, the ultimate High Priest, and the Bread of Life. Also, the ark of the Covenant was to be made out of pure gold with no blemishes (Ex 25:11). Likewise, Mary was free from the stains of original sin by necessity since the moment of her Immaculate Conception.

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he "greets Mary as 'full of grace'; he calls her thus as if it were her real name. He does not call her by her proper earthly name: Miryam (= Mary), but by this new name: 'full of grace,'" or in Latin, kecharitōmenē (John Paul II, Redemptoris Mater,8). This does not mean that Mary is just "'graced,' but 'full of grace,' 100 percent, up to the brim, to the creature's limit" (Peter Kreeft, Catholic Christianity, 416). Therefore, there is literally no room in her for any type of sin or impurity. Also, in biblical times, people used to change their names when something significant happened to them and changed their lives. For example, Saul changed to Paul and Abram changed to Abraham. Likewise, Mary's new name signifies a great change in her life; it signifies that she "is full of grace because she is about to become the mother of God and God could do nothing less than prepare her for this role with every grace possible" (Nicholas Ayo, The Hail Mary, 44).

We also believe that Mary assumed, body and soul, into heaven, although the Church is not clear on whether she died before this. Also, when Jesus addressed John and Mary at the foot of the cross saying "Woman, behold, your son!" and "Son, behold, your mother!" we believe that Christ was giving his mother Mary to the world, and so is our mother as well (John 19:26b-27a).

Catholics have many devotions (such as the rosary and the Angelus) and feast days dedicated to Mary (such as the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 and the Birth of Mary on September 8), however we do NOT worship her, as many people believe. Yes, we do pray to her, but prayer is a conversation with someone in heaven. We ask our family and friends to pray for us down on earth - we do the same with Mary and the saints. They are still living - the only difference is that they are in heaven.

There are three types of honor: cultus latreia, hyperdulia, and cultus dulia. The highest is called latreia, or "adoration," and this honor is only given to God. The lowest is cultus dulia, or "veneration," and this is honor given to angels and other saints. In between cultus latreia and cultus dulia lies hyperdulia, or "higher veneration." This is the type of honor bestowed upon Mary. "The special veneration due to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is substantially less than the cultus latria (adoration), which is due to God alone. But it is higher than the cultus dulia(veneration), due to angels and other saints. As the Church understands the veneration of Mary, it is to be closely associated but subordinated to that of her Son. 'The various forms of piety towards the Mother of God, which the Church has approved within the limits of sound and orthodox doctrine according to the dispositions and understanding of the faithful, ensure that while the mother is honored, the Son through whom all things have their being and in whom it has pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell, is rightly loved and glorified and His commandments are observed' (Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium, VII, 66). (Etym. Latin hyperdulia, virtue of deep submission.) "

Why do people believe Mary to be the Mother of God?

Mary was a godly Jewish women, through whom God honored and chose to bring His eternal Son into the World, as the New Testament reveals. There is no Biblical basis for continuing calling the Mother of Jesus virgin, after his birth. This is a doctrine of man, not of God. Also, the claim for appearances of Mary, as a perpetual virgin is anti-Biblical on two counts.

Firstly, Joseph "knew her (had marital relations) not till she had brought forth her first-born Son: and he called Him Jesus." Matthew 1:25. By that reason alone, Mary was only virgin for the birth of Jesus Christ, not after the normal relations of marriage, which obviously took place with Joseph.

Even if there were no children conceived, the definition of virgin means to not have any relationships of sexual nature. Yet, if we honestly check the Scriptures, we find, "Is this not the carpenter's son? Is this not His Mother called Mary? And His brethren (Greek: adelphoi)*, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas (not Iscariot)? And His sisters, are they not all with us?" Matthew 13:55. *Mark 6:3 also clearly calls these His brothers, Greek: adelphos. There were at least 2 sisters (Greek: adelphai), possibly more by the wording, "are they not all with us?" So, Jesus had at least 6 or more siblings through Mary and Joseph.

The reason that Mary was a virgin for Christ's birth, was so that God could send His sinless Son into the world to bear our sins. If He came like you or I did, by man and woman, then he would have been born a sinner. That means that He could not have died for our sins, because God requires a perfect sacrifice for sin.

God pictured this in the Old Testament by requiring a spotless, blemish free, perfect lamb for sacrifice for sins. Of Jesus, John the Baptist said: "Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." Through Jesus we can find forgiveness of sin and restoration to God.

So, to call the Mother of Christ, "the Virgin Mary," is a complete misconception of God's purpose, which defeats the truth of Christianity. Mary was blessed of God to bring our Savior into the world. Secondly, to classify her in spiritist appearances, is a violation of Scriptures, since God condemns such activity for His people. "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination,...Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer." Deuteronomy 18:10,11. This is not the Mary of the Bible, who was blessed of God, but a fake, made up by man. Mary was a godly Jewish maiden, who paid strict attention to the Law of God, and would never condone the unscriptural spiritist actions that some claim for her. ANSWER It is right to call Mary "Virgin" according to Catholics. Some will point to Matthew's gospel to say that Mary did not remain a virgin for he says "he knew her not, till she brought forth her son..." The Greek heos hou (till) however only deals with the time up to the birth of Christ and not after, Mattew 26:36 is a good example of this, where the disciples stay rather than leaving Jesus. Some also note that Jesus had brothers, but the Greek adelphos, had a much broader meaning including children of the father but not the mother. In Acts ch. 15 we read of about 120 brothers. In Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40 we see that some of his 'brothers' are actually his cousins, their mother being another Mary. There are also many cultural aspects such as the fact the Jesus was rebuked by his 'brothers' - something younger brothers did not do. On the cross Jesus gave Mary into the care of John yet under the law if Jesus had brothers the next oldest would take care of Mary, for the oldest child had to care for a widowed woman. St Jerome wrote a whole piece titled 'the perpetual virgintiy of the Blessed Virgin Mary,' St Augstine refered to as "heretics" those who do not believe in her perpetual virginity, and St Basil said true friends of Christ believe in it. As to why the Virgin Mary appears to people, who knows. God's will is God's will. The people in heaven are alive of course (Matthew 22:32), those who are 'dead' can appear on earth for example Moses and Elijah appear in Matthew 17:3 and in Matthew 27:53 we read that "coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, [many saints] came into the holy city and appeared to many." Not that Mary is an angel, but another verse to consider is Matthew 18:10 "See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." === === Jesus himself reveals a possible reason why Mary may "appear" to some people... Matthew 24:24, 25 - For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand.
