Viruses (biological)

A virus is a small infectious agent that can replicate only inside the living cells of organisms. Viruses display a wide diversity of shapes and sizes, called morphologies. Generally viruses are much smaller than bacteria. Most viruses that have been studied have a diameter between 10 and 300 nanometres.

What is the causative organism of Swine Flu?

Viruses. Flu of any type is caused by influenza viruses. In swine flu the specific microbe is the Influenza Type A, H1N1/09 virus.

Additional Note:

Viruses are sometimes classified as microbes. However, not all scientists classify a virus as a "microbe". Most of them do for lack of a better way to talk about them instead of "germ" or other less specific nomenclature. Unlike the other microbes, they are not living organisms. Viruses are specialized groups of "cells" that perform functions working in an organized way. They latch on to and break into a living host's cells and use the life, energy, and nutrients from the host in an almost parasitic way. The genetic material that they have inside themselves combines with that of the host's cells to cause the host cells to stop reproducing more cells like itself for the host and start making viruses like the one that invaded it instead.

Does alchol gel kill the virus?

No. However, you are instructed, to rub the gel for at least thirty seconds. The act of rubbing does kill most viruses, except those which are protected in the creases of the skin. If you really want to kill them, wash with soap and water. If you can't wash, then use plenty of the gel, and rub it in hard for thirty seconds to a minute.

What must a virus do to live?

It is questionable whether virus is "alive" or not. If it were alive it wouldn't have to do anything to live, it needn't food or drink. Virus is sometimes considered to be just a more complicated molecule.

If you get a vaccination shot will you die from the flu or swine flu?

I got the shot yesterday. I'm not dead. Sure, there havebeen cases where that has happened, but so few that you're more at risk not getting the shot.

Will you die from getting the regular flu shot? Same risk.

Come on.

Get the swine flu shot.

Seriously. Now. Go.

Can Coronavirus survive on clothes?

The coronavirus can, it can go into a scab, your mouth, and on clothing.

Are there only two types of rabies?

Yes.

The two types are furious rabies and paralytic rabies.

In furious rabies, the animal starts being restless, then becomes highly excitable and will snap at anything in reach. Even humans with this type of rabies have been known to bite others. Eventually paralysis sets in. As paralysis begins to set in, salivation increases and swallowing becomes more difficult causing the well known sign of "foam around the mouth".

In paralytic rabies, the animal has minimal excitability and often remains relatively quiet and may even seem unaware of it's surroundings. The animal may become irritable and bite if handled. Paralytic rabies is especially common in cats.

Rabies is a viral infection of the central nervous system and attacks the brain. Without treatment, rabies is always fatal within just a few days.

Is Ebola virus gram positive or negative?

I think that the colors are purple and redish. Red on the inside and purple on the outside. The colors fuse together in between the middle and outside.

Hope i answered it

Are fox rabies common?

Yes, foxes do fall under the RVS catagory. RVS stands for Rabies Vector Species, which means that they can contract and spread the disease to other animals. Foxes are on the hot list, as well as skunks, bats, raccoons, and many other animals.

List two ways viruses differ from living things?

1) Viruses do not grow, they are a certain size from the moment they are made. Just a protein coat and a set of genetic instructions.

2) Viruses do not respire they don't turn over energy at all, they hijack living cells which can turn over energy and use them to do their reproduction.

3) Viruses do not excreat waste products- they don't make any so they don't need to. Most living things make some toxic substances which must be got rid off eg carbon dioxide and urea.

4) Viruses cannot reproduce, make more of their own kind without hijacking the apparatus of a living cell.

Can you be born with rabies?

If the mother is infected with rabies while in late term pregnancy with the offspring, then those offspring could be born infected with rabies. More likely, however, is that the mother will either not be far enough along to deliver term offspring prior to succumbing to rabies herself or the infection will cause her to abort the offspring and/or abandon them to die.

How can rabies be prevented?

Rabies can be prevented by vaccinating pets ( dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets) and educating people. If people would only understand that death is almost always the outcome, fewer people would get this disease. Do not handle wild animals or strays. Contact an animal control officer upon observing a wild animal or a stray. Beside pets, people can be vaccinated, too. This especially true for people who live in areas where the number of rabies cases is high. People who work with bats should be vaccinated as well.

How does a virus multiply itself?

1.) Virus' tails attach themselves to the host cell

2.) Virus' sheath goes through the cell wall

3.) Nucleic acid injects from the head of the virus into the host cell

4.) Ivrions appear causing the cell to burst carrying many copies of the original virus

The virus' capsid (protein coat) includes proteins that enable it to enter a host cell bye binding to receptors on the surface of the cell and "tricking" the cell into allowing it inside. Once inside the cell transcribes and translates the viral genetice information instead of the cell's genetic information.

What is the difference between the Swine Flu and Ebola?

They are not the same exact virus but they are similar. The virus that causes bird flu in humans first mutated from a virus that birds had so that it then could be passed to humans and now it is passed from human to human. The same thing happened with swine flu that started among pigs as a virus they got and then mutated to spread to humans. Viruses replicate rapidly and are able to mutate very quickly in some cases to create new strains that can multiply in other areas and hosts.

For information on how to help prevent the spread of viruses like bird flu and swine flu, see the information in the related question below. (Viruses are also known as microbes.)

Do viruses cause vomiting but never diarrhea?

Viruses can cause both vomiting and diarrhea. The "Norwalk Flu" is a name given to what is also commonly called "Stomach Flu", which is gastroenteritis caused by viruses. With it you can get nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as well as a fever and aches. Many other viruses also can cause these symptoms such as the flu viruses. However, usually there are also obvious respiratory symptoms with influenza that are more severe and last longer than the GI system signs and symptoms.

Where is rabies most prevalent?

It depends on the region. In the southwest it is spread by several sources. Racoons, skunks, bats and coyotes. Never ever touch a bat dead or alive and always question why a skunk or raccon is wandering around in broad daylight. Most northern sates are not as affected by rabies and have only one strain coming mostly from wild animals/stray dogs in the summertime.

In Texas Rabies is epidemic, year round and there are several strains. It's proximity to Mexico where rabid coyotes and dogs regularly cross the shallow Rio Grande. There have been summers so bad that animal control authorites are ordered to shoot all stray dogs on site whether or not they are wearing tags. In winter time the Raccoons and skunks are whats called "reserviors" or carriers of rabies so the rabies virus can survive through to the spring. Bats in caves year round will sometimes have a rabies infection rate of 100% and one can catch it just by breathing the air in the cave. Also in epidemics animals not know to carry Rabies will have cases. Such as horses and hamsters.

Rabies isn't just spread by bites. Unvacinated kittens eating from a dish that a rabid skunk ate out of night before. Rabies symptoms are not always the ferocious dog foaming at the mouth. They can be lethargic or fearfull, or show no symptoms at all.

Please Allways ALLWAYS keep your pets up to date on rabies vacinations. Keep a collar with a current tag on your dog and cat at all times especially if it spends time outside. Do not allow your dog to run loose. Use caution dealing with stray kittens or cats. And especially do not pick up an injured or young wild mammal with your bare hands. Use traps, nooses and crates, etc if you must. If you live in urban area and a wild animal is hanging around your home - call the anmal control authorites imediately. Do not attempt to deal with it on your own.

I could go on and on. But basically you just cant be too carefull.

Why can't viruses be treated with antibioticts?

Antibiotics work in ways that would not effect a virus. For example some antibiotics work on the cell wall of the organism. Others block protein synthesis by binding ribosomes. Viruses are merely nucleic acid (RNA and or DNA) and protein. That means antibiotics are ineffective on viruses.

Do ducks have rabies?

Never. Rabies or hydrophobia is purely a mammal's disease.

Can you get the flu from being in the cold?

Yes, it is possible but infrequent in otherwise healthy people. Usually the body is infected with only one virus at a time. But, unless you are immune to that particular virus, it is possible to become infected at any time, regardless of whether you are already sick.

The immune system produces various antibodies, so if you are sick with a cold your immune system has already started producing more antibodies, some of which indiscriminately attack all foreign invaders. This is probably why, once you are sick with a cold, you are less likely to get the flu or anything else at the same time since the immune system has already been alerted and is working hard. However, it is not impossible, it has happened. You will know if you get both. Cold symptoms will pale in comparison to the flu and the flu will come on abruptly. What felt like just congestion and a runny nose will turn into a pounding headache, cold sweats, muscle aches and possible nausea. Moreover, the flu symptoms will probably end before the cold does.
