As for the current war in Afghanistan, the al-Qaeda branch based in Afghanistan attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, killing almost 3000 people. The Taliban supported al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, so the US responded by attacking the Taliban. The Americans had the support of the Northern Alliance, the internationally recognized government of Afghanistan at the time. The Northern Alliance would only support the operation if the US promised to stay and restore order after the Taliban had been ousted.
Afghanistan is not at war with anyone. Afghanistan barely has a government and an army. First off the war is still raging intensely but everyone has forgotten about it. The Americans and the british are the two main organized forces. The "enemy" are the Taleban who are the enforcers of the Islamic religion and the Koran the sacred book of the Islamic people. They are certainly harsh but simply want everyone to believe in the religion. Obviously this is not going to happen. The war will never end.
The Vietnam War is recognized as have gone on for 19 years 180 days, it started in 1955 in a combined effort with the French, and the first US miliatry ground troops deployed in 1961. The US began reducing their troops in 1972, ending in 1974.
i believe, such wars are never won, a win in such a situation is a defeat/loss.
a war between two brother, even if one is ridiculous, should not take place in first place, supposedly, if it takes place, then, the harm and damage to any brother is a damage to the later. he agrees to it or not.
so, taliban killed their brothers, and northern alliance killed their brothers.
i would rather say, A War Without a Winner.

We secretly (ha ha...) helped the mujahadeen, the Afghan freedom fighters who opposed the Soviet invasion. We helped them because they killed Communists. We gave them modern weapons and training in how to defeat a larger, well-armed and well-trained fighting force in tanks and helicopter gunships. We taught them how to make roadside bombs to blow up convoys of trucks. We taught them basically everthing they know about modern warfare. Guess who they're using it against now?...

In 2004 US Ambassador to Canada Paul Cellucci stated that, although he was disappointed in Canada for not outwardly participating in the "Coalition of the Willing", Canada indirectly provided more support for the US in Iraq than "most of those 46 countries that are fully supporting us. It's kind of an odd situation."
1) The Taliban, a radical regime which quickly seized power in Afghanistan following the end of the Soviet-Afghan War, and 2) the Northern Alliance which was supported by the US and controlled the northern part of Afghanistan.

Which one?
For hundreds of years different nations have thought that it would be a good idea to go into Afghanistan. They've all been wrong.
If History teaches us one thing its that Afghanistan is the only country in the world never to have been conquered by any nation.
