Winter Olympic Games

There are no winter Olympics in 2016. Winter Olympics are held every four years on a two-year offset from the summer Olympics; the last one was in 2014, and the next one will be in 2018.

The 2015 Summer Games still have a week or so to go, but the US is currently leading with gold medals in 26 events. Second place is currently Great Britain with 16, with China (15) hot on their heels. The US is also leading the overall medal count at 70, with China in second place with 46.

At the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China won the most gold medals with 51. The United States was second with 36 and Russia was third with 23.

For all Summer Olympics, the United States has won the most gold medals with 930. he total increased to 975 after the 2012 Olympics. The former Soviet Union is second with 395 and Great Britain is third with 207. Great Britain total increased to 236 after the 2012 Olympics and dropped to 4th because China increased it's total from 201 and 5th position to 239 becoming 3rd on the list of total Gold Medals won.

Through the 2006 Games in Turin, none. Australia has won 3 gold medals at the Winter Games, all in individual events (2 in freestyle skiing and 1 in short track speed skating). Australia has won a bronze medal in a team event, that being the men's 5,000 meter short track speed skating relay at the 1994 Games in Lillehammer.

At Grenoble, France Peggy Fleming won the Women's figure skating gold.

The exceptions were 1992/1994--that's when they decided to do the Summer and Winter games in separate years, so there's some kind of Olympics every two years. Also, there were no games during World War II (1940/1944). The first Winter Games were held in 1924.
