All people who follow any spiritual path can be misunderstood, their practices looked upon with fear and misinterpretation by those outside of their practice. Lack of knowledge and the fear that stems form it, is the biggest obstacle to overcome for all spiritual groups.

If they have "gone looking" for something else it was because they failed to find what they needed in what they grew up with.
