World Series

Every MLB team plays 162 games in the regular season. Teams that make it to the postseason could play upwards of 20 additional games (possibly 1 for the Wild Card, up to 5 in the ALDS/NLDS, up to 7 in the ALCS/NLCS, and up to 7 in the World Series).

Prior to the 2007 World Series, the last time a team overcame a 2-0 deficit was 1996 when the Yankees lost the first two games to the Braves and then came back and won four straight to win the Series 4 games to 2.

Swede Risberg, SS, Chicago White Sox. 8 in the 1919 world series. Albeit, he probably intentionally made the errors (so, are they real errors?) since the "Black Sox" threw the series to the Reds. Risberg was a weak hitter - fielding was his prowess. So, it's pretty obvious his "boots" were "all about the money".

In MLB, the most no-hitters thrown in a regular season is two and has been done by four pitchers ...

1) Johnny Vander Meer of the 1938 Cincinnati Reds - June 11 against the Boston Braves and June 15 against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

2) Allie Reynolds of the 1951 New York Yankees - July 12 against the Cleveland Indians and September 28 against the Boston Red Sox.

3) Virgil Trucks of the 1952 Detroit Tigers - May 15 against the Washington Senators and August 25 against the New York Yankees.

4) Nolan Ryan of the 1973 California Angels - May 15 against the Kansas City Royals and July 15 against the Detroit Tigers.

Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies also threw two no-hitters in 2010, one in the regular season (May 29 against the Florida Marlins) and one in the postseason (October 5 against the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS). The May 29 no-hitter was a perfect game.

The first World Series, in 1903, was a best-of-nine Series. There was no world series in 1904, and from 1905 - 1918 the World Series was best of seven. From 1919 - 1921 baseball returned to the best of nine format. from 1922 on the World Series remained the best of seven.

The Detroit Pistons famously did it against the Orlando Magic in (I believe) 2003.

Tracy McGrady commented that it felt great to finally reach the 2nd round, though the Magic only led 3-1 (JINX!).

Tayshaun Prince cemented his reputation as one of the best SF defenders in the league by slowing McGrady for the next 3 games and helping to win the series.

According to mlb.com, Chase Utley of the Philadelphia Phillies was the 34th player in MLB history to hit a home run in his first World Series at bat. I could not find a complete list of those that have accomplished this feat but some of the others that have done it are Troy Glaus of the Angels in 2002, David Ortiz of the Red Sox in 2004, Dustin Pedroia and Bobby Kielty of the Red Sox in 2007, Gene Tenace of the Athletics in 1972, Andruw Jones of the Braves in 1996, and Jose Santiago of the Red Sox in 1967. Bob Turley of the New York Yankees and Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals with three Game 7s each.

Turley, of the New York Yankees, pitched in relief in 1955 and got a no decision, pitched in relief in 1958 and got the win, and started in 1960 and got a no decision.

Gibson, of the St. Louis Cardinals, was the Game 7 starter in 1964, 1967, and 1968. He was the winner in 1964 and 1967 and the loser in 1968.

Up to five games are played in the Division series in the MLB. The first team to win three games advances to the next round. The final two rounds, the League Championship series and the World Series, are best-of-seven (the first team to win four games wins the series).

As with most collectable vintage programs and publications, condition is the key factor in determining value, and with regard to World Series programs, it's especially important. Whether a program has been scored, folded or rolled will also have an impact of value. Non-collectors should note there are always two different programs/scorecards produced for each series; one representing the American League champions and sold at their home field, and one for the National League champs, sold at their home field. The 1923 World Series was a "subway series" featuring the New York Yankees versus the New York Giants. The Yankees/Yankee Stadium version would be worth slightly more to collectors, but both are scarce. In fine condition, with no overt problems, each would be worth $700-1100. Scans and digital photos can save alotta time in the authenticating, appraisal, and selling process.

3. 1958 New York Yankees, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Milwaukee.

4. 1968 Detroit Tigers, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over St. Louis.

5. 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Baltimore.

6. 1985 Kansas City Royals, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over St. Louis.

They beat the most feared team of the 60's, The Baltimore Orioles in 1969 and in 86' they beat the Boston Red Sox when Red Sox First baseman, Bill Buckner let a ball roll through his legs in the bottom of the ninth inning Scoring the winning run that is true!

Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series MVP award in 1979. He also won the regular season MVP and NLCS MVP awards that year. He is the only player to have won the regular season league MVP, championship series MVP and World Series MVP awards in the same season.

The Yankees weren't in the ALCS in 1997. They lost to the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS that season. In Game 4, Sandy Alomar Jr. hit a home run off of Mariano Rivera that tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The 1962 Giants lost a heartbreaking seven-game Series to the New York Yankees.
