It probably depends where you are , or where you go I bought some from a Shell gas station and I'm only 15 years old so if you cant somewhere you can always just search around for a place that will sell it to you.

Slide the lighter body out of the lighter case, by pulling on the wick cage. With the lighter body upside down squirt lighter fluid into the fiber packing in the lighter until saturated. Reassemble the lighter body into the lighter case. Let excess lighter fluid evaporate before using the lighter.

Beattie Jet Lighters were made from the mid-1940s until 1961.

The jet lighter was first invented by London-based Guy S. Barker in 1929. He filed his U.S. Patent on November 5th, 1930 and was granted his patent on January 17th, 1933. Inventor William E. Evans, who worked for the Waterbury Lock and Specialty Company of Milford Connecticut, created a refined design based on Barker's original work. Evans filed his patent on August 25, 1939 and was granted a patent on May 20, 1941. Yet a third jet lighter design was created by Francis Leslie Phillips who received his patent approval on December 30, 1947. Phillips design is almost an exact duplicate of Evans' earlier design.

It is possible to differentiate earlier Beattie Jet lighters from later versions by both the patent number(s) listed on the lighter and by the typography engraved onto the lighters' bottoms. Earlier lighters list Guy Barker's patent number: 1894300

Later versions list both the Evans patent number (2242906) and the Phillips patent number (2433707). Oddly, some Phillips-designed lighters with a reservoir fill screw on the bottom list the Barker patent number and not the Phillips number.

Sometime prior to 1944, the patent rights to manufacture the Beattie Jet lighter were acquired by Robert W. Beattie of Brooklyn New York. Beattie, who grew up in Upstate New York in the Long Lake area attended the Manual Training High School, an engineering and technical school where he developed an appreciation for ingenuity in invention. Though the Beatties lived in Brooklyn where they operated a pre-school, Beattie and his wife, Elvira, owned and operated a summer camp - Camp Beattie - located on the west shore of Long Lake. The camp is no longer in operation; it has become a private residence. Robert Beattie was also apparently an early marketer and/or distributor for the original Jet lighter made in England.

The Beattie Jet Lighter was produced in nickel plate, chrome plate, engine-turned chrome, heavy silver plate, heavy gold plate, and in solid sterling silver. One could buy them encased in lizard, morocco, and pig skin leathers. Prices ranged from $6.95 to $49.00 for the solid sterling models. A desk model in either morocco or pigskin was sold for $11.95.

Champ also produced the Champ Jet Stream lighter (c. 1950) which was essentially the same, as did Lord Chesterfield (c. 1955) and MasterCraft Spit Fire (c. 1955). Rogers produced the Rocket Flame Lighter in Japan (c. 1958). The Jet lighter, made in England and marketed by Robert Beattie, was probably the oldest - patented in 1929.

You do not have to be 18 in Colorado to buy a lighter but most chain stores wont sell them to you unless you are the legal age to buy tobacco

If the lighter is damaged not through abuse, it can be sent back to Zippo to be repaired free of charge. You do have to pay shipping charges. OR it depends on how its broke. you can replace the flint which is sold in most wallmarts or gas stations or you can replace the wick which you can usally find at the places i listed above.

Rubbing Alcohol works nicely.. cool blue flame too. : You can use any fuel based liquid as long as the flash point is lower than the Naptha liquid used in Zippo and Ronson lighter fluids. : Using higher flash point fuel is dangerous because the metal chimney (one with holes) gets hot, and the heat disipates into the fuel chamber agitating the evaporation of the volatile liquid. : However, lower flash point fuels can and will create sooth and deposits in the Zippo system, which means higher costs on wick replacements, chimney cleaning, dirty flints, using more flint strikes, etc, as it was never designed to use these other types of fuels. : In the end, it would cost more to maintain the lighter in top condition. : In case of emergencies, such as camping and military use, Kerosene would be the next best. Never use jet fuel such as Jet K, because they contain additives for jet turbines that would produce toxic fumes on a Zippo.

You can be any age to buy an empty zippo. They may question you if you look really young. The best place to get one would be a corner store or some gas station, they usually don't care about age. The thing is, you can be any age to buy an empty lighter but you have to be 18 to buy the fuel for them. I live in Fl and I'm 17 and bought one. Not the fuel though, some I.D. you for fuel.

A scripto wind resistant kitchen lighter can be refilled. There are lighter fluid containers that can be purchased at gas stations or convenience stores. This can be used to refill the kitchen lighter.

How exactly would the universe obliterate itself if it reached 0 Kelvin? I don't think you understand heat transmission in a vacuum. Additionally if the entire universe had a collective temp of 0 Kelvin then it would have to assume that all matter was evenly separated, that there were no black holes and that the universe has stopped expansion and was neither retracting but just static. Even then though the universe being at 0 kelvin would not be what killed it but a result of being dead. When you evaluate matter in all its forms you can see how preposterous that statement is or to put it another way:

PS, with enough pressure everything does not freeze but lighter fluid in normal circumstances will freeze at -220 F. The thing though is at what temp is it still useable? depends on your heat source, as you still need to raise it's temp to its flash point, so at a cold enough temp you may get it to spark but not remain on fire due to the temp of the liquid. Ronson light fluid has a flash point of 4c.

I usually refill mine about twice a week. This also depends on how big the Zippo is and how often it's used.

As an experiment, and after alot of time on Wikipedia, I'm in the process of trying this.

I tipped a dribble of Coleman Fuel on the bottom of an upturned coffee mug and lit it. It burned beautifully with NO smoke. I tried it with proper Swan lighter fluid and it burned exactly the same but with plenty of smoke.

My zippo is currently in bits on a radiator drying out so I can try it with pure Coleman fuel. At £6 for 500ml, it's a bit cheaper and alot more convenient if it works... I'll report back in an hour or two.

Just tried it - perfect. Burns exactly like lighter fuel except perhaps even less smoke!
