If you have Google Chrome installed you can simply do this:

WARNING - REGISTRY EDITING IS NOT FOR AMATEURS

=====================================

Go to Start -> Run

Type regedit and click ok

Go to this place

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

mailto

shell

open

command

There should be a key labelled "(Default)". Right click and hit Modify

Paste this in:

C:\Users\Matt\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --app="http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to="%1

Click OK

Now, as long as you leave Gmail signed in you will just get a simple compose window when you click a mailto link.

Hope this helps :)
