Alchemy, a form of speculative thought that, among other aims, tried to transform base metals such as lead or copper into silver or gold and to discover a cure for disease and a way of extending life.

Although there are significant disadvantages to Santiago's journey therefore, in the suffering he experiences, what he gains through that journey is of far greater worth than what he sacrificed and the negatives he experienced. He, unlike the crystal merchant, has had the courage to take that risk, and it is clear at the end of the book that this is a decision he does not regret.
