A rickshaw is a 2 wheeled cart that is pulled by a human to transport people from place to place. Rickshaws (or rickshas) are a mode of human-powered transport: a runner draws a two-wheeled cart which seats one or two persons. The word rickshaw came from Asia where they were mainly used as means of transportation for the social elite. However, in more recent times rickshaws have been outlawed in many countries in Asia due to numerous accidents.

If you speak about rickshaw in 2012, we have more 3-wheeled rickshaws which are partly human-powered, others are motor or electric powered (Autorickshaw).

The 2-wheel-rickshaws come from jinrickshaw in Japan, they are still used at some historical places also in India, have 2 rather great wheels and 2 bars where the puller pulls it. Please, Google for pictures of "rickshaw and Kobe or Kyoto or Kolkata or Japan, China ...Hanoi".

3-wheel rickshaws (Tricycles) are today much more spread (without and with motor).

Motorized rickshaws have normally 3 wheels and are either connected with 1/2 a motorcycle in front or with a cabin upside and a scooter downside.

Not-motorized 3-wheel-rickshaws are human powered with pedals (look for becak or beca or pousse-pousse or also trisikad). Beside the trisikad (that is a normal bicycle with a "sidecar" at its left or right - the passengers sit beside the driver!) all others have 1/2 a bicycle as "power unit" and two passenger seats behind or in front of them ("tadpole"). Look "trishaw"!

Other tricycles which are not rickshaws, as they are not used to transport other persons are three-wheeler for handicapped persons; the invention of this wheelchair with front-drive was around 1655 in Nuremberg, Germany by Stephan Farfler - see Google pictures!

The first car at the time of its invention was also a tricycle (Benz Patent-Motorwagen Number 1) but perhaps not a rickshaw.

All modern times rickshaws have much smaller wheels than the original rickshaws in Japan, China and India which makes it much easier to take place in them. "Rickshaw", as you see, you can regard as you like it - many varieties!

In some places rickshaw means a hanger with 2 seats behind a normal bicycle!

My summary: Styles are fantastic but between rickshaw and technology still lie miles!
