The real difference between dial-up and DSL is the fact that DSL is faster and doesn't hold up the telephone line unlike dial-up. Cable on the other hand is much faster than DSL and dial-up, using fiber-optic cables, able to pull of tremendous speed without the use of a telephone all completely!
It does not have to be DSL it can also be cable, fiber, or satellite. But it does have to be some kind of high speed service. Dial up will not work.
