IM stands for Instant Messaging where as SMS stands for Short Message Service And, SMS is going phone number to phone number. so if i know your phone number, i can sms you can you can sms me back without having to log into our IM accounts, etc.

∙ 12y agoiMessaging is only available for iOS 5 devices (iPod Touch 3g/4g, All iPads, and iPhone 3GS 4 and 4S. You can only send these over wi-fi and to other people with iMessage. If you want a cell phone, go with the iPhone. Texting is to all cell phones.

∙ 13y agoAccording to Wikipedia "Text messaging, or texting, refers to the exchange of brief written messages between fixed-line phone or mobile phone and fixed or portable devices over a network." whereas "Instant messaging(IM) is a form of real-time direct text-based communication between two or more people using personal computers or other devices, along with shared clients. The user's text is conveyed over a network, such as the internet. More advanced instant messaging software clients also allow enhanced modes of communication, such as live voice or video calling." -- The difference seems to be that the first one doesn't have to be instant. Like an email an SMS would just wait for the person I sent it to. The second one doesn't even have to be text anymore. Communicating via web cam over ICQ is instant messaging.
Theoretically chatting would be both, but in practical use instant messaging is using software/internet and text messaging is using a mobilephone/SMS.

∙ 12y agoe-mails are basically letters that are typed up on a computer and sent, just like a letter except it's not on paper and in an envelope. An IM is a chat that you can automatically reply to the person and they get it instantly and can instantly reply back to you without sending e-mails back and forth.

∙ 10y agoAn Instant Message - is usually sent between two users on a computer networt. Delivery is instant (hence the name) and the response can be just as quick.
A Text Message is sent to a mobile (cell) phone - the message stays on the network's server if it cannot be instantly sent to the handset (eg - if it's switched off). The recipient will not see the text until thir handset is switched back on.

If you have iMessage installed you can only iMessage other iDevices that has iMessage installed on them. If someone has an iPad 2 but not with 3G but has an iPhone, then the iMessage will go there iPhone.
