What is wrong with your hot water taps if no water is coming out of it?

If you have no hot tap water, you probably have no hot water at all in the house. The answer would be that your water heater is off, by which i mean the flame blew out and you must reflame it. This is how you do it.At the water heater there is a square grey valve, that controls the gas that goes in to the heater.You must put the valve on top to "pilot",then hold down. But before you do that, underneath there is a panel, that you must remove in order to light the pilot. Remove the cover and get a flash light, so you can see. You should see something that looks like a stove pilot, hold the red button down so you can feed the gas to the pilot, then light it with a log lighter aka long lighter. A flame will light if done right, but don't let go of the button. Believe it or not there is a censor that must heat up. Let go of the button slowly. If you see it wanting to shut off just hold it back down, or start over again. Give it time, like 5 mins or less. Then let it go. Bingo your heater is back online.it will take 30 mins or so to reheat the water.joe hojas

Obviously as it's not doing what it's supposed to do. It could be switched off or the thermostat turned down or the pilot light is unlit (if a gas heater). Anything else should be seen to by a plumber who is certified to work on gas appliances.

There are several possibilities. Here is a check list:

A) Can you get hot water at any other faucet? If YES then the problem is local to the sink or its supply. If NO then the problem centers around the hot water heater.

A.1 - Check the shut-off valve. The shut-off valve (also called a stop cock), is usually located under the sink. It may be turned off. Turn it half way. Do you have hot water? If YES turn the valve the rest of the way and you are done. If NO the problem is either in the faucet or the lines leading to the sink.

A.2 - Check to see if water is getting to the sink -- Turn OFF both the HOT and COLD valves under the sink. Check that you get no COLD water. Using a wrench (if this is a hex nut) or pliers (if this is a knurled nut) gently loosen the nut on the SINK side of the HOT valve. You will get some water dripping out as the hot water line empties. Open the HOT water valve slightly and then close it immediately. Does water run out? If YES then the problem is in the faucet. If NO the problem is in the pipes between the hot water heater and this sink.

A.3 - Faucet is bad. -- Check to see if there is a screen on the end of the faucet that is totally plugged. Some faucets can be repaired or rebuilt. Without knowing a lot more about the specific make and model I can't guess. Plan on replacing the faucet or calling a plumber.

B) Problem is in the pipes leading to the sink. Unless there is an additional shut-off valve this is usually a problem beyond the casual home owner. Most Plumbing is laid out with a main line that has side branches to each location with water. Check all of the other sinks for hot water. If this is the only one with a problem then try to trace the feed to this sink back to the main line. Look for additional valves or damage to the pipes. If any work was done recently concentrate on the area where this construction occurred. You are likely to need a plumber.

Just one tap or all hot one's? Just changed a sink and the hot water side had 4 inches of buildup in the supply line both ways from the shutoff valve.

If this is happening on one tap only then you have to turn off all water and take the tap and the shutoff valve under it apart. The problem may be a broken washer.
