Area codes began throughout Canada and the "Lower 48" United States in 1947. In the early days, you rang a special long-distance operator and told her "area code 312, KLondike 5-0123," and you could just as well say "Chicago" as "a/c 312." By the mid-1970's, all but a few remote places gained the ability to dial directly without an operator.
