E-Mail was used on ARPANET, the military version of the Internet, in late 1971. Ray Tomlinson's team wrote the first e-mail software. He made the decision to use the '@' sign because he wanted a symbol that wasn't used for anything else. It is ironic that the amphora has been a symbol of trade and transport throughout history.


In August, 1991 Tim Berners-Lee posted on the alt.hypertext newsgroup where to download the CERN web server and text-based browser. Web servers were then launched around the globe. Shortly after a new newsgroup was created named comp.infosystems.www.
