Are the Appalachian mountains in the eastern us or southern us?

The Appalachian Mountains and the various ranges in them cut diagonally from the lower New England states, through western New York State, cutting down the northeast center to southwest of Pennsylvania, into western Virginia and all the the southern State of Alabama. The Appalachians extend west into Kentucky.
